While I'm tempted to pre-purchase so I can play the beta, with release only tentatively a month away, I don't feel like paying out for an early preview.

Do what I do: let other people play the beta, watch the streams/videos of them playing, then decide whether to buy the game.  ;)

Or just buy the cheap version. I'm honestly surprised - there's one version of the game with a bunch of bonuses that's going for $50 (the gold standard for major game releases), while there's another version that lacks the incentives but is selling for a mere $30. That's a very good price for a fairly high-profile game release!

The 4GB dl is crawling for me.
Wait, it's 11GB for me. Plus shitty internet currently.

The whole game takes up less than 10GB space, so something is off with your dl. Mine was 4.4GB

I know that Payday (1) was tiny (2GB or something like that), so it kinda surprised me when it told me 11GB (11400MB) for the 2. I'm still dling, but it says 11GB in properties (and I had to make space as I had only 10GB free).

steam is bad about dl sizes.  When I was updating PS2, it claimed I would need to download something like 2 terabytes of data.

Is anyone playing the Beta right now? I just finished the download, but Hemmingjay's the only one on my friends list that's even shown as owning it.

I am very surprised that they are doing a beta! This is great news and I am happy to be wrong! Have fun guys!

I'm starting to get the feeling that with a lot of games Beta is becoming the Alpha release of yesteryear, and Alpha is the new first patch. You release a game once it's in a publicly playable state, and any bugs or hardware inconsistencies that people come across are "because it's Beta", and where before the team would have to work double time in order to plow through all of the problems right after release now, because the official release is a ways off, they can work under a lighter (But still strenuous) load in order to get the game polished out for the official release.

They needed to release the Payday 2 Beta because Beta releases are the new QA testing - It's large scale and people even pay you in order to do it. Without the Beta release they wouldn't have been able to smooth things out as much as they planned to for the full release.

As for my feelings about this: Squeeee!

I played a solo heist when I should have been working and it was supposed to be an easy Jewelry store smash and grab. It was actually pretty damn hard and the AI was doing a decent job. In fact they came to save me 3 times. Hard game is hard. I imagine how hard when you realize one player on your team is actually a 7 year old and is running around aimlessly setting off alarms and killing civilians.

Then I had two good rounds and found some pretty rare mask stuff, sadly, I am sure the beta will wipe it. In fact I found the mercury material and a crazy mask and if I assemble it together the mask would cost me 158,000. Gross.

Looking forward to heisting with you gents. Sadly I don't have money to splurge on a paid beta, so I'll have to wait until release!

I am planning on setting my alarm for 4 hours or so from now so I can wake up and pull a sleep deprived heist in the middle of the night.

The game feels like the original Payday got a huge makeover, with a lot of reused sound assets, but it's still pretty awesome. If you didn't like the original Payday, though, you probably won't like Payday 2 any better.

In other news, does anyone know if your progression will hold over to post-Beta?

Edit: It appears that it won't. Sad face.

not that it matters in the least, but the voice acting is the flattest I have ever heard. It's like they hired the radio voice from Arma. It doesn't affect anything, it's just like your connection guy is on thorazine or something, no emotion in his voice ever.

Played a bit (did 3-4 missions).

The way you choose missions in solo is shitty. Missions pop up or something, with random difficulty, and if you want a specific one, well, you have to wait for it (or you can create them, but I don't know how ??).
I've not hosted on MP, but it seems better, since everyone is on fairly low diff missions (jewelry, stores, etc), so it's kinda what I want, but it was much more practical in the 1. Though, I joined a stealth jewelry (joined when the drill was about to finish) on overkill, was nice.

AI is still kinda dummy (going in a room one by one), but they have a tad more interaction (taking the bags, etc). The shooting part is better imo, with more damage and recoil.

Skills looks more interesting and varied than in the 0, which is nice.

I'm not always sure of what's going on in a mission though, but that was the same when I started the 1, so I guess I'll get to know it better.

I didn't have a problem with selecting a mission in solo. I find it cool and dynamic, rather than just selecting the same old thing from a menu. The jobs are created dynamically so they are each a little different. I like it.
