Keep in mind, they are Elder Gods.

Actual story wise, I played Mingan while my friends played Shin, Ingram, and Darshendros. Ten plus years, all the way from "low power demi-human" up to Gods. We went around straight up attacking and killing dozens of roleplays in between our plots, which eventually culminated in Mingan, Shin, Ingram, and Darshendros stealing some Godfire and spending a few months distilling it into Divine Rank 0.

From there, it was a matter of plot, powermurdering entire forums, and exploring the Internet until they retired as Elder Gods. It didn't just spring upon them; they earned, stole, and learned it all the way.

There's quite a few artifacts I could import from Backstory that you'd lust after.

Todesengel, Mingan's "rapier"; relative temperature of zero absolute.
Duality, Shin's battlesphere. Similar to liquid metal, capable of instantly changing form, to any weapon.
Darsh's Talon, Darsh's knife claws. Can cut through any material short of True Pure Adamantine +5
Ingram's Box of Fun: All the poison.

The non-Epic are cool. Bloodglass Daggers, Flaying Scales, Dazzler, Crystal Arrows...

Actually, quite a few gods are from characters.

Kuro is one. Vijer is from an ex girlfriend. Daimonas is the invention of... I forgot his forum name. Xero, the dude who played the Angelborn of Shin in Alpha Party. Coranthiir is a mutual creation between the Shin player and I. Sanoci is another. Illeni. Pellegrin. Quite a few people contribute. 

Granted, I wrote the Aspect form and did most of the pantheon, but still.

I wondered the same thing, but I'm pretty sure its Defender of Faith, the max rank someone can get in piety for a deity. So I figure its really just short of being an avatar of them.

Fixed that. In certain aspects of their portfolio, you ARE the god when the god is busy.
