There are several, not all are listed.

Earth, Metal, Air, Water, Fire, Light, Electricity, Sound, Spirit, Magic, Chaos, Order, Death, Life, and then a whole bunch of Lesser / Least artifacts which are the mixes between. There are a few magic items that certain scholars believe echo with the Artifacts. Naga Emeralds, or whatever I called the soul gems on the front page...

I think there's five, actually, based on the fact that there were five clans/tribes/whatevers and the room was a pentagon. It's just that only Red and Blue were the ones we were invited to fuck with/know about/won't instagib us.

I think. Basically the others ones aren't tests, they're deathtraps, since the other three leaders probably aren't gonna be like 'Go ahead! Steal our shit!'

Anyone ever read Three Parts Dead?

This is a bit out of nowhere, but I just can't stop thinking about how much fun the villain was. He's that type of villain where he really is a bastard, but in such a way that he's like ones you see in real life, and when he finally gets his comeuppance, the only thing I could think was "She should have made him suffer." Which is usually rather unlike me...

Good villains always believe themselves in the right, though, and act justifiably to some standard. Just common sense, to make the antagonist sympathetic.

Oh, he thought he was in the right, and acted justifiably for his standards. But when both the Good Guy and the Bad Guy are essentially liches?

He was almost sympathetic towards the beginning, before we found out what sort of stuff he did(aka a form of mind-control on his students to turn them into a personal magic laboratory that was perfectly synced to him to allow him to basically run a magical supercomputer and also made them his slaves essentially). It was at the end, when he was captured but in such a way he couldn't die(or he thought he couldn't) and was bragging about how he'd get out of there eventually, become a god somehow(this had been his plan the whole time, and considering the way Gods worked in the setting it wasn't unreasonable and he almost succeeded), and would subsequently mind-break, rape, and generally make the protagonist's mentor his plaything, and especially when he just became super-angry after being truly beaten(as in she was able to kill him even from inside his prison where he thought he'd be perfectly safe due to his machinations), there was a simultaneous moment of "FUCK YES KILL THE BASTARD YEAHAHAHAHAAAHHH" and the knowledge that if I had been in her position I would have let him scream and beat the walls of his cell as he acknowledged his fate before killing him. I don't usually like knowing I caused people pain, but some people...

There's making an antagonist sympathetic, and there were certainly plenty of those in the story, but there's also a certain visceral pleasure in the defeat of a truly vile antagonist. There's also a certain art to it to make it so stuff isn't being done generically or fur teh evulz, but that you hate their for their mindset. It's not even about the methods they use or the goals they have; it's that their personality is one that makes you want them to die horribly in a fire.
