Ooh, seal of earth. Hm, I recall rolls for chance of attunement for it a while back, I'll dig those up.

So, artifact attunement rolls, since you guys are about to find a Shaman Seal. This is in order of likelihood,  starting with "one in ten million" and the odds getting better, all the way down to "one in one thousand".

Rurail - 8169601.
Sylvari - 656378.
Thales - 72670.
Daeth - 9737
Jewel -  977

Second round :

Rurail - 81/100
Daeth - 14/90
Jewel - 43/50

Final:

Rurail - 25/50
Jewel - 20/25

In other words, the two people who could re-roll to attune are Jewel and Rurail, after studying it.  Daeth could try, but it would be hard and probably would trigger the THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN SEEN CANNOT BE UNSEEN.

Sorry, no instant inherent knowledge of the Earth Seal.

It would be a remarkable coincidence If Jewel's natural 20 to resist Death damage was a manifestation of geomancy or earth Elemental gifts, wouldn't it? XD

A wonderfully remarkable coincidence. I hope I get insanely lucky on that earth seal. One outta roughly a thousand isn't great, but its far greater than one outta roughly ten million.

To be clear, there is not just one roll, one chance. There are things that you can do to increase the odds, most of which involve "study and meditate on it".

Think of this set of artifacts as being locked and your character as a key. Out of the Beta party, three keys fit in the lock, but only two of them can be "easily" made to actually turn.

Could you explain those attunement rolls, or are they one o those GM trade secrets?
(How did both Jewel (lowest number) & Rurail (highest number) manage to get into the second round? What's xx/xx mean in the second & third rounds?)

I'm curious about that too. I'm guessing it has something to do with your deities and experience as a ruin diver, and Jewel because earth elemental, but I'm not sure what the two numbers mean. Understand/Attune, maybe? I assume that because Daeth had a really low first number.

Rurail had a one in ten million chance of instant attunement, and so on down the line to Jewel's one in one thousand. 8 or higher meant that even if you did not, you still felt Something from it that was in some way familiar and dangerous. It means that you can, indeed, re-roll more frequently than the average person and have a small chance to get attuned at random (very low odds).

You also get a (small) bonus to using the artifact.

Second round had better odds to determine whether or not you would understand and be able to act upon it. This means that you can increase the chance of attunement through exposure and experimentation, and havea bbigger bonus.

The last roll? I'm sure that you will find out what that was for soon. ;)

Roll 2: Aptitude

Roll 3: Try using the artifact in different situations to see what happens. :)

Translated:

Anyone can try to use it, with varying degrees of success
Daeth, Rurail, and Jewel have the potential to become attuned
Rurail and Jewel have a natural ability to use it
Rurail and Jewel can acquire feats and abilities similar to that of an Attuned wielder even without becoming fully in tune

Aside from the risks from having an expensive, unique, and powerful object in your possession? Generally, no. For the Seals? No, it's all upside.

Some of them come with terms and conditions, though, and a person is bound to change in some way.

Alpha: Conclude chat (reaction)
Alpha: sky fight (Action)
Beta: Siegebreak battle, brief reaction scene (mostly action)
Both: Union and END BOSS (half and half)
Both: Act 1 Conclusion, post-act free levels or variable-level "paths" (reaction)

I am excited. Act 2 in 2015!
