Since the army thing has the approval of a few folk, I've put a little thought into just who/what the Second Circle of mages would be. One would be Olaf Shatterstone, Evil Horse, Stubborn Mule, and Loyal Dog, a Darsh/Sav/Kuro worshipper who multiclasses in Dracopriest and Barbarian. Also, his mount, his load-bearer, and his best friend.

Quote
A well-built man with red scales on his skin, expressive eyes that seem to change from green to brown (and sometimes red), and tribal tattoos all over his upper body. He has a streak of silver hair forming a widow's peak. His teeth are blackened from acid. He's a dick. Even when he's nice to you, you get the feeling he's an absolute dick, but he has a way of really looking at you as though he's actually interested in what you have to say.

One of the Third Circle is simply known as "Hyper Doom Pixie".

Quote
Two feet, five inches tall, with tri-color blue eyes and blue hair. Her eyes suggest she has done things she does not approve of more often than anyone else should. She's cheerful, polite, and quiet. Also, sort of cynical, vaguely racist, believes everyone can be saved through coercion/violence/death. Has a way of being quietly intimidating. Quietly an alcoholic.

HYPER DOOM PIXIE

I did notice something though. One, that the distribution of skilled vs. less skilled seems a bit skewed, and two, that the healers and engineer-style mages should probably be in different proportions at different levels, as well as having other abilities at the higher levels(a second-circle earth mage is great at fortifications. And at pretty much anything else, too. Like making earth elementals. Or causing the ground to eat people.). Just saying; not as simple as 'X percentage know Y magic', at least if you want realism(to the degree that it's magic and there's realism).

For example, I would think it might be more like 4 Second-Circle, 26 Third-Circles, 180~ Fourth Circle, 60~ Fifth Circle, and 40~ Sixth Circle.
Second Circle: 1 life magic specialist, 1 earth magic specialist, one thaumaturge, and one illusionist(Second-circle illusionist. Sounds dumb, but when you get that good...dear lord...)
Third Circle: 7 life-magic specialists, 3 earth/metal magic specialists, 2 water magic specialists, a wind/weather specialist, a fire specialist, a necromancer, Muse, summoner/planes magic specialist, Hyper Doom Pixie, 'psychic', Forge-magic specialist, Teleportation expert, Divinist, 2 Ward specialists, Blaster
Fourth Circle: 32 Healers, 8 Disease-specialists, 7 Life-magic specialists, 6 Light-magic specialists, 8 necromancers, 6 summoners, 9 illusionists, 2 shadow-magic specialists, 22 earth-magic specialists, 8 'crafters', 5 Diviners, 8 enchanters, 5 Muses, 3 Animal-magic specialists, 26 teleportation experts, 4 Water magic specialists, 3 Wind Magic specialists, 1 fire magic specialist, 2 'psychics', 7 Ward specialists, 1 diplomancer, 9 Ritual specialists(all work together, usually)
Fifth circle: 20~ Healers, 4 Ward specialists, 2 enchanters, 1 diviner, 3 forge-magic specialists, 5 teleportation experts, 3 shadow-magic experts, other. Varies from time to time, as these aren't the professional mages the above circles are; they're people with a good amount of magic talent that also happen to be in the army. Probably soldiers a good deal of the time, and go attached with squads as necessary for support on a small-scale basis, rather than the support and specialized duties the others fill.
Sixth Circle: Varies greatly. I view these as little more than the camp followers with magic.

So I'll be strategizing tonight, but one thing first: will conventional healing spells still heal Morgrod or will they harm him a la D&D?

I'm gonna guess it depends on what they're based on. Life magic, maybe. Holy magic, probably not. Restoration magic, probably. Musical magic? Definitely. He has ears after all.

Does magic have a magic domain? Can we cast magical magic spells?

No idea. Magic is based on soul, so I guess soulomancy would be magical magic.

Which immediately brings to my mind magical soul food and soul music.

Healing spells will heal the target regardless of their relation to life. Yes, this means you can heal a dead body and fix its wounds. No, it doesn't mean you can heal a dead person to life, although necromancy and life magic operate on similar principles.

***

This is a high-magic setting.

I was thinking, but not set on:

Lesser - .25
Minor - .5
Normal - 1
Major - 2
Greater - 3

6th circle is less than or equal to .5
5th circle is greater than .5 and less than 1
4th circle is greater than or equal to 1 and less than or equal to 2.5
3rd circle is greater than 2.5 and less than or equal to 3.5
2nd circle is greater than 3.5.

I am fully aware that I am fucking up statistics-wise, I am just not exactly in a hurry to fix it. If you would like to numbers-tinker, I won't complain.

***

Some people theorize that Magic is an element and that Humans and Sidhe are the Realistic and Fantastic expressions of that Element, if that helps. :D

Fudge fixing:

15.8% of people have between .25 and 1.5 power. 5th and 6th circle. Call it 48 people.
68.2% have between 1.5 and 4.5 power. 4th circle. Call it 205.
13.6% have between 4.5 and 5.5 power. 3rd circle. Call it 41.
2.2% are between 5.5 and 7.25. 2nd circle. Call it 6.

As to "Why would a powerful mage want to join some mercenary army?", I need only point out to you that a dagger between the ribs puts a crimp in many a spellcaster's style.

Not to mention the whole "Most powerful caster in town knocks on the door of the second most powerful and says 'Join me or die.' The most powerful and second most powerful casters go to the door of the third most powerful and say 'Join us or die.' The three most powerful spellcasters..." thing. At some point, someone with common sense is going to nod, smile, march along, and promptly get the fuck out of there as soon as is strategically convenient.

Ross, would it be okay if after this mission Alpha party split for a couple of turns? I got some stuff I want to get done.

Namely, I want a couple of apprentices. Plus more ghouls. Lots more ghouls. What kind of magic would it take to make them able to breed and make more ghouls do you think?

A nice candle-light dinner, maybe some music to help set the mood.

So they'd be able to breed without any more enhancement?

Dammit Gamerlord, now I need a goal -
I just realized the perfect thing to do.
I need to know this for the future: is there any particular city where worship of Pantxike is widespread?

Wherever it is, it is not a top tourist destination.
