The Hundredth Tile: Toaster Edition [Round 1, Turn 7]
« on: May 20, 2013, 09:15:21 pm »

Anyone remember this thread?  I'm bringing it back (minus the minecraft because holycrap that's a lot of extra work.)

The Hundredth Tile:  Toaster Edition

And I'm twisting the rules to my own preference.

The Rules:
There is a blank board of 100 tiles, including the finish tile, and a starting podium. The aim of the game is to get from the podium to the portal room first.  At the start of each turn, I roll 8d8 and a d20 for each player for initiative.  Players pick in order of initiative.  (Tentative picks are allowed, so if you are fifth in line but first to post, you could pick your top five choices and I give you the first available.)  Tiles are allowed to modify initiative.  If a player land on a blank tile, he or she can invent a rule for that tile, which can be pretty much anything (Some rules apply).  If you land somewhere which already has a rule, then you follow the instructions on that square.  If a player misses two turns, they will be stricken from the board and another player may join in their place.   The first person to the end is the winner- exact roll is not needed.

A new feature for this go-around:  The winner can suggest the theme/style of the next round, a la Roll to Deathmatch.  A leaderboard will be maintained, and the first three people to finish each round will be allowed to continue to the next round, while waitlisters/newcomers fill the remaining spots.  Once the third person finishes, I'll end the round and place the remaining people according to how close to the goal they are.

The rules for making tile rules are as follows:
  • No tiles that move you more than 10 in either direction are allowed, unless exchanging with another player.
  • No insta-win/loss tiles, or tiles that change the objective.
  • No tiles that change the board (IE no sub-boards.)
  • No tiles that effect only (a) certain player(s). If you do, I'll rephrase it to be "random player(s)".
  • No "When you pass this tile" tiles. You have to land on them!
  • No hidden status effects-you have to explain them as they are named!
  • I reserve the right to modify tiles I think are too game-breaking.  I will do my best to maintain the spirit of the tile.

FAQ:

Q: Can two players be in the same tile?
A: Yes.  There's no special effect.

Which option do you prefer?  If you don't care, that's fine, but please say so.

Red, option two. I'm gonna try to get the hang of these rules.

When it says "claims a d8 each" does that mean before or after it's rolled? Because if it's before then you could just say d8 is rolled for each player.

After.  For example, the first turn I won't actually roll but will say:

Turn one!  Your numbers are:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

And each player gets one.  With option one, first come first serve, but with option two I'd roll to see who gets what.  Really, I could just roll for each player in option two, but it allows people to mess with initiative via tiles... and serves as a test bed for adding other stats in future rounds.

Orange, the colour of blood, #2.

Also, can a tile affect the player who created the rule?

You must have interesting blood.

Yes, but not on the turn the tile is created.  So if you land on Tile 3 and it's blank, and you make the tile "Go ahead 5 spaces" you stay on Tile 3 instead of moving to Tile 8.

Also, there are no "chain reaction" tiles, so if the next player landed on Tile 3 and got moved to Tile 8, they would not trigger Tile 8.

EDIT-  Also, that's 6 of 6 votes so far for Option Two, so we'll go with that.

Er, you misunderstood. The rule states 'No tiles that effect only (a) certain player(s). If you do, I'll rephrase it to be "random player(s)".'. Does it still apply if I make a rule 'Dariush does a backflip the next time he lands here'?
