Hello new here
« on: May 19, 2013, 04:17:27 pm »

Have this question about the game just found and i like it a lot.
But was wondering if it is possible to attack other fortresses with your dwarfs or will that be implented in
Future builds?

Other question is about the world. You can create a huge world but your fortress is just at one point so
I would like to know why do you need to create such big world with al these events and history?

The first question I'm not so sure. From what I understand at some point you will be able to send armies to other places on the map, although not control them directly. (You would remain playing on the fort while the army is away)
I may be totally wrong.

There are also mods (Masterwork comes to mind) that adds this sort of thing, within the game's current limitations.

Other question is about the world. You can create a huge world but your fortress is just at one point so

For starters, if you play on adventure mode you can travel all of that world, even visit fortresses you've played with long after they have fallen, and actually battle hand to hand with whatever destroyed your fortress.

Regarding fortress mode, apart from giving you options of where to settle, the world generation defines the history of civilizations, who was born and how they lived their lives, affecting the skills, age, genetics, perks and loads more of the migrants that go live into your fortress. You can even recieve a former adventurer you played with, as a migrant to your fortress. (That's what I've heard, I haven't played much on adventure mode to try this)

On the next update the world that you generate will continue living while you play on your fortress, and the events of the world will interact a lot more on what happens on your fortress.

Hello,

Thanks for this information.
I am just learning the game with youtube videos from zemalf and couldnt understand why a big world
With history has to be created. I thought it would make sense if you good travel with dwarfs and attack other things in the world.

But I better focus on defending the fortress for now :)

For the sake of lore, the game generates an entire world. So that when you found a fort, it exists in a living world, where stuff actually happened.

If you're looking for a specific kind of embark site, a larger world makes it more likely that you'll create at least one that fits your criteria. (Up to a certain point, anyway - the site cap gets in the way with Extra Large or whatever worlds.)

As for history, the longer it runs, the more vampires, werebeasts, mummy tombs etc. there are in the world for you to interact with as an adventurer - and the fewer megabeasts/titans, but the ones that are left will be more badass. Dragons keep getting bigger for 1000 years.

For fortress mode, you've got to let it run at least 100 years to give the necromancers a chance to get their tower on, but that's all you really need to get the full fortress mode experience.

In a way with the adventure mode you can roam around and attack everything, but the fortress mode takes place in the one embark spot.

Other question is about the world. You can create a huge world but your fortress is just at one point so

Good answers above already, but not only the generated world has it's own history before you start your fortress (or adventure), the civilization you choose also has one. Perhaps, the king/queen has died in the past, perhaps the whole civilization has been destroyed just as you (with the seven dwarves) left for the new site. All this, and more, can randomly happen, creating interesting stories.

And one thing about the world generation is that Legends -mode is a "game" on it's own. You can generate a world and just read the Legends to see what happened.

p.s. Nice to hear you're learning the game with my videos - I hope they've been useful :)

I followed along your latest videos as well Zemalf, they're pretty awesome. What's it going to cost to get you to continue them? :P

I'm sure there's some that's willing to donate to the cause.

This game is really a personal project of the developer, and thus unconstrained by the usual commercial and utilitarian considerations.  It is already way more detailed than is necessary, and one day will probably be about as richly detailed a "fantasy simulator" as it is possible to imagine.  This uniqueness is part of its charm.  We players just have to remember that we're "along for the ride" as he builds his game.

Hello there! I'm also new! But here are my answer to your questions.

>>>Go to adventure mode and you can attack just about anything that comes your way. :)

>>> Maybe because it's fun to have a big world rather than a small one so you can roam and run around even with just one fortress. :)
