I tried this fix for the Crucible, but it hasn't changed anything.

Do I need to build a new one? Or perhaps it won't fit it until I create a new world?

There are at least two 'entity_default.txt'-s in the game folder, which one did you edit?

-> \dwarf fortress\raw\objects -> editing this fixes only newly generated worlds
-> \dwarf fortress\data\save\region...\raw\objects ->fixes existing worlds

I can't build a bifrost forge until I dig stupidly deep and find magma naturally? This makes the magma creating Armok's blood gems a lot less useful.

Bifrost forge is removed from 3.0, and the material is also bugged, this is how you fix it:
open inorganic_stone_mineral.txt (in your save\raw folder,) find the bifrost entry (line 93-126) and add this at line 127:

[ITEMS_WEAPON][ITEMS_WEAPON_RANGED][ITEMS_ARMOR]

After this you should be able to forge bifrost weapons in the forge in you have bifrost bars available.

Back in my day we had to build a 100-plus depth pump stack to get deep magma up to the surface, not just dig down and look at it  once ;D
LOL gran'pa :D

Huh.

You mean, the bifrost forge itself doesn't exist, but there's still a pointless blueprint you can make for it?

I think I wasted quite a bit of time making a few of those.

Anyway yes I think I edited the wrong default.txt to fix the crucible. I'll try again.

You won't believe how I got the Bifrost I have at the moment.

My dwarven Javelin thrower squad, unarmored at the time, and with wooden weapons, beat three frost giants to death.

It took minutes of continuous whacking. Teeth went everywhere.

For some reason they did not fight back. They were Frost Giant kidnappers and thieves. I'm not sure if that was why.

Well, this is embarassing.

I took a break from playing, came back to it... and I still can't work out how the hell to do certain things.

Case in point: Orchids and treants.

The manual says to place them in spawn locations.

Spawn locations do not exist.

I think I saw a changelog for some version of Masterwork saying the seeds were removed since they lack a reaction. I have no idea what version I'm currently using.

So... do orchids and treants not exist? I can't see how I'd pasture them when I only have seeds, not the entities themselves (which I have no way of getting hold of, it seems).

Am I missing something?

What version are you using?  Treants and orchids I believe were removed in version 3a about a year ago. We are on 4j now. There has been a ton of new updates since then including a new version of DFhack so spawning and magic works every time.  It's pretty much a whole new game with how many updates there have been in between those versions.

Probably check out the bug report thread too.  I don't have much experience in this newest version since I started back at school so I don't know if it has any glaring bugs.

Maybe he is on old official Mac/Linux versions, they have not been updated in ages.

It's a PC version and it's the one (or one of the versions) in which the Warpstone lab was still "just a teaser", if that helps.

I downloaded it some time ... last year I think. I can't work out where to check the version.

Anyway, can I update to a new version without losing my saved games and world? I would like to update (especially if I can use Warpstone as dwarves now. Can I do anything with it?) but don't want to lose all my progress.

Oh and one question regarding runes... There's a "no fear" rune for armour, right?

Could I theoretically put that onto a breastplate, get a civilian ballista operator to wear it (put him in the military and then make him off duty?), and therefore have ballista crew that don't run away from enemies?

The NOFEAR thing works, yes. :)

Its on the .rar file, the folder you extract it to, and in the DF main menu ingame. Its says "Play Masterwork DF V.Xx"

No, you cant update saves. You have to start new worlds and new forts.

Well I'm not sure why... but no, it isn't in the menu. The main menu only has a number in the bottom right corner which I am assuming is the basic Dwarf Fortress version. 0.34.11

The options given are "continue playing" and then "create new world", plus the testing arena etc. No version mentioned.

I used a custom folder name which must have overwritten the version number in the folder name.

Damn.

Any particular interesting features I would REALLY benefit from having via updating?

Also...  does the gnomish artificier need the magma sea revealed to build? Because I just bought the blueprints but can't build one. It's not in the workshop menu. Unless it's in a sub menu somewhere?

EDIT: Disregard that. I found it under Furnaces.

New features? How about THREE ENTIRE NEW RACES? Gnomes, Warlocks and Succubi. And tons and tons of other stuff. Seriously, just head over to the main thread (where the download is) and scroll down a lot. All changelogs for all versions are in there.
