Only 4th place!?!

I actually feel kinda chocked by the fact that Darwinia, Flow and Cave Story, although excellent games per say, beat Dwarf Fortress. Well, at least its mentioned and I guess it's good PR for the game, but still...

This is a list, not a ranking.

Even if it was, how well known is DF when compared to those three games? All of the games were taken from a larger list that people on their forums suggested.

Also, Dwarf Fortress is an alpha and it's up there against finished games made by teams (such as Sam @ Max)

Even in alpha, Dwarf Fortress is the greatest game ever. I pity the those foolish souls who would turn up their nose at this game because they consider its graphics inferior, and behave as though it is somehow beneath them.

Heh, like was said, I don't think it's a rating, just a "50 best indie games"

Nice that DF was #4 though - more exposure for those too lazy to click through all the pages!

I was pleased to see Deady Rooms of Death (DROD) on there too.  Probably the most mind bending puzzle game I've ever enjoyed.

That list is how I discovered DF a few months ago.

DF has consumed my every waking moment since  :D

1) I agree with GameHat, it seems to be just a list, not a rating.

2) I wasn't implying that it's not #1 because it's an alpha, rather that it is a great accomplishment considering an alpha version of a work in progress is already heralded as one of the best indie (or not indie!) games of all time.

3a) There's no reason to condescend on people who can't overcome the DF graphics. It's very hard for people to understand (and therefore get into) that aren't used to roguelikes and the sort. I've friends who simply are too keyboard defunct to really get into the game too. Personally I can play it when I come home hammered at 4 am with minimal fuss cause I'm used to it, but it's strange, foreign, and unattractive territory for the uninitiated.

3b) I know this isn't the place to complain but lets quit with the whole holier-than-thou internet rejection of aestheticism. I'm sure everyone's sexual fantasies are rife with ugly people with hearts of gold...

Yeah, some of these games would definitely be not in my top 50. I particularly detest platformers. I mean, someone still plays that shit?

I was pleased to see Mount&Blade, this game is really awesome. And you can play it freely until level 6.

Oh, some nice suggestions on there. I've been bookmarking some for lazy days.

And It's definitely not a ranking. Battle for Wesnoth is on page 4, and it's probably the open source game.

FreeCiv, FreeCol and Open Transport Tycoon are also missing, but clones of commercial games might not qualify.   ;)
