Any limit on invaders?
« on: May 16, 2013, 03:50:51 pm »

I'm waiting on a particular force to invade my fortress, to set it up for a succession game I've been planning for ages. I built the fortress, then turned on invaders. I've gotten several forgotten beasts (which I just sealed into the caverns) but after several in-game years there are no sieges. My fortress's wealth is ridiculously high and I'm within range of both goblins and necromancers... Are they not coming because I already have several forgotten beasts wandering around? Or do I just have to be patient?

What is the fort's current population?  I think the default (according to the wiki, and also seeing this with a current fortress) is that the goblins will not siege until the fortress population is over eighty.

There's a few things that could cause it;-

1. You're at peace with your neighbors (unlikely, but possible. Check the (c)ivilisation screen).
2. You're out of range of your neighbors. The embark screen isn't perfect, it can show access to a race even if it's too far away to trade\attack.
3. You already have an active siege\ambushers. - Storing live goblins\wildlife\megabeasts in pits can block addition spawns, cages won't. I'm not sure if forgotten beasts effect this. If in doubt Kill them and see what happens.

Have you had any contact with goblins\kobolds? You should at least have thieves\kidnappers sneaking around if you're in range.

Wait, can you turn on invaders after the world has already been generated? I thought once you made a world with invaders turned off, it's stuck that way, regardless what settings you choose afterwards.

The option is in d_init.txt (in the data\init folder). It takes effect next time you restart the game.

I'm not 100% sure you can turn it off during world gen, unless there's something under the advanced parameters I've missed.
(Or you're using a mod, then it's possible you may have shot yourself in the foot.)

It's been 2 or 3 in game years, not sure. There are 2 forgotten beasts and that's it. I've caught goblins in my weapon traps and kobolds have been chased off by the dogs. The population is only about 40 but I'm not looking for a goblin siege; I want a zombie siege. And I know this is possible because in a previous version of this same map (which I had to abort due to a bug and revert to an earlier save) I did get a zombie siege, with an even lower population than I have now.

If I want to get rid of the forgotten beasts I'll want to just cheat to do it. I'm just trying to set up a story, not play the game for real. What's the easiest way to kill forgotten beasts without endangering your dwarfs? Something simple, like spawning a floor in the air above them and letting it crush them?

And yes, you can turn invaders on and off at will. It's in d_init, not the raws. Has nothing to do with worldgen. With invaders off, there are no goblins, kobolds, sieges, or forgotten beasts at all. Whenever you want you can save the game, turn them on, and open the save and they will start coming.

Using the liquids command in DFHack, you should be able to create an obsidian floor (or several, just in case) mid-air. Enter the loo'k' screen and then use gui/liquids in DFHack for maximum ease.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Hm... Strange... I spawned an obsidian wall a couple floors above the FB and unpaused, and it just... stayed there. I double- and tripe-checked, it's definitely not touching anything else above, below, or to the sides. It's just floating in mid-air. I... I don't know what to think of this.

EDIT: I did it a few more times. Now they are all floating in mid-air all over the place.

EDIT2: Okay, the game crashed from too much hacking so I loaded up the save again and tried it again with floors. The first time I put a floor in mid-air it collapsed appropriately, but the second and third ones stayed floating in mid-air. I think I need to find another way to kill FBs because something is seriously buggy here.

Zombie sieges (presumably from a nearby tower) seem to follow different rules.  I've had them show up before the end of the first summer, and I've have them not show up until the third year.  And I've had them not even be sieges.  Sometimes a necro will sneak onto the map by himself and reanimate your refuse stockpile with no alerts given.

Well, they key is, I want zombies on the map somehow. I did manage to kill one FB by the way, and not long afterwards another one showed up, after several years with no new arrivals. So I guess there is a limit and the FBs do count. I'll have to keep picking them off somehow until I finally get some dang zombies!

I'm not a guy! And I've never touched the raws. This is pure vanilla. I'm just using DFHack to try to spawn floors to crush FBs. It is... not going well.

EDIT: AWESOME! I seem to have a necroomancer snuck onto the map reanimating everything. I can't find the bugger, but there are zombies everywhere now. YAAAYYYY!!! Time to get my succession game set up! See you all in the community games forum, hopefully tonight, tomorrow at the latest! (Look for Necropia!)

I'm not a guy!
Wait, did that "The Legendary Female Gamer" was there before? Or you just put it after I post?
Sorry guy girl, I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings or any other girl affecting stuff...
Regarding the necromancers, sometimes they don't come with the zombies, they are so scared about all that legendary axedwarves they decided to stay  in their home tower, and just throw a bunch of zombies to make their dirty work...
Also, someone will understand why I'm asking this, Is the zombie stuff kind of a zerg rush?

It's been there for years. : )

Zombies didn't arrive on the map, but all the old corpses started animating, so I assume there's a necromancer somewhere although he doesn't show up on the units list.

Unfortunately, after I used DFHack to switch mode to adventurer and leave the fortress active so we can retire there, and brought an adventurer there to check it out, it seems the zombies are gone. At least, I can't find them anywhere. What a disappointing waste. I thought hostile forces remained on the map after you leave it, but maybe zombies follow different rules... Will have to do some more !!Science!!.
