Zombie corpses are spamming my necropolis
« on: May 16, 2013, 05:41:27 am »

As a side project, I've begun to build a grand necropolis for my fortress to replace the old slab-yard. It has a large entrance hall stretching multiple Z-levels up and down, a thin pathway leading to the entrance over the depths, and two bastions protecting the gates of it, with every square inches smoothed. It's truly a fortress in a fortress.
Recently, I'm carving out the actual crypts and tombs, but I've encountered a really annoying problem: After removing the corpse stockpile, I noticed that many coffins has been assigned to the generic undead dwarves who had been killed in the past few years... (Eagleboulder is 12 years old now, so they are many.) so the slab-yard will remian untouched a little more.

I've read on the wiki, the game counts the dwarf corpses as a part of my civ, so they will be buried assigned in my coffins.

Is there an easy way to "keep them away" from the necropolis?

I'm thinking about a method which would require a lot of effort and coffins; eventually, the number of required coffins would be the total number of the deceased undead dwarves plus the fort's dead ones... that would require thousands of coffins, literally. So... I would place all of the coffins in the abandoned mineshafts, and set them to burial. As a result, all dead would get their own coffins, so I could check them one by one, and deconstruct those whith normal dwarves, and move them to their engraved crypts. However, It would be really tedious work, so I want to know if there's a better alternative for the task.

Regards, G.

Instead of using the coffins for (b)urial, you can make them Tombs, which need to be assigned to a dwarf explicitly.

yeah, you can deal with it pretty easily.  One method is to build a separate area and set it for burial but to disallow citizens.  This will deal with all the zombie dwarves.  You can also do it by having a large corpse stockpile (it can be good to have these instead of going straight from battlefield to coffin) and forbid non-citizen dwarves.

Does the dwarves the necromancers bring make ghosts? Can we just "atom smash" them with a bridge? As far I know they aren't dwarves, they are na generic dwarf entity, just have the body of a dwarf, they aren't historical figures.
Also, thats for you all bay twelve: If you call dwarves dorfs, the goblins gobbos and the humans hummies, what you call an elf?

yes yes and yes.  But dumping and forbidding works too.

If a zombie earns a name through kills it becomes a historical figure. Not sure if it can get ghosted, though.

cannibals.
And I was with fear of you calling them tree-huggers... Nice, there's aways a way of make it worse when the things come to DF.
Also, anyone have another name for them?

This thread got derail'd quickly! :D

Back on topic, thanks for the answers!

Yes, this is the best way to restrict outsiders from the tombs, and I'll use this method in the future, but it doesn't suit the current situation. I have a large corpse stockpile for my civilians, and a new tomb for them. The problem is that the coffins are randomly assigned to civs and non-civs.

(Un)fortunately, 've processed all corpses of those abominations, so I can't forbid them. It seems when a coffin is assigned to a corpse corpse, the game doesn't care wheter their carcass is available or out of existence. In my observations, undead corpses aren't placed into burial receptacles, dwarves just leave them rot on the ground wherever they are lying.
I think disallowing citizens will be the solution for me, thanks for the advice! Time to crank up the coffin industry!  :D

if a coffin has been assigned erroneously you can just deconstruct it.

When I read the topic title, I thought the thread was about a vast necropolis housing the bodies of the honored dead of a decades old fortress, torn by war for its entire history. And a necromancer or three had snuck in.

To read it and find out it's merely a discussion on a) fiddly game mechanics and b) the proper nickname for elves... I am slightly disappointed. I say slightly because now I'm going to run a war torn fortress for a few decades, bury everyone in a vast necropolis, then unleash a couple necromancers in there. Just so the imagery in my head is brought to life in glorious fashion.

May take a few weeks, work is busy lately.

I almost want to embark near a tower just to do this.
