Will we be able to take abilities that we passed on the next time we level up? I'm having a hard time choosing between a defensive boost that I didn't get from my shitty rolls or getting a ranged attack with bladed weapons...

No, they're generally not going to come up again. The whole point is that you make hard choices every other level (or four levels, or six levels for secondary/tertiary) to determine your playstyle.

I find it sad that a ranged attacker has more Def than the main tank... I should have picked a toad for my race...

I guess I'll take Fierce Soul for my ability. Having an allround defensive boost is more important than being able to attack things, since I am the tank after all, I'm meant to suck up the damage and leave my teammates to the killing.

So, freeform are you going to be doing the Mario rpg with the rules you found? Because I rather like running games despite the fact I never have good plans and let them fall apart like a bridge made with gum.

Yes and no. See this post for details. Basically I don't have the time right now, and I really am liking running this game instead.

Yeah the race system wasn't planned all that well. It'll probably even out eventually (with progressions and ability path stat boosts).

I'm gonna just remove the weapon qualities system. It's a holdover from Fire Emblem that doesn't make thematic sense, and it's too much work to track. The only exception is stuff like Inezach's eggs and Mushrooms which are fairly obvious one-use items.
