Are Thrips Men Hostile?
« on: May 15, 2013, 09:03:03 pm »

After starting a large construction project on my newly created base, my woodcutter goes to the wagon to get a drink. A couple of seconds later, I get the announcement; "urgard *insert dwarven name* has canceled drinking; interupted my Thrips Man." Next thing I know, there is a massive group of Thrips Men and Women running on the ground above my base! So, I was wondering; "Would thrips bring massive amounts of fun?". So, I'm just asking if they are hostile, they don't seem to be, but I do not want a massive thrips invasion on my hands.

Aggressive but not openly hostile.

They will not go out of their way to attack your fort or Dwarves but will take a swipe if anybody gets too close.

Thrips men (and virtually all flying sentients) are irritating rather than hostile. They'll spawn in huge waves, occasionally path into your underground fort and get stuck, clog up any traps they find, and can't be butchered.

and can't be butchered

Oh it can be done by editing the following from the entity file (way down to the ethics section of the Dwarves):

EAT_SAPIENT_KILL
EAT_SAPIENT_OTHER
MAKE_TROPHY_SAME_RACE
MAKE_TROPHY_SAPIENT

Just by changing from UNTHINKABLE to ACCEPTABLE.
I always do that to get a variety of meats and bones (possibly hairs (for spinning into wool) and leather as well).

Meh, Cheating is the weak mans option in my option. You may as well just suggest removing them altogether.

I would not call it cheating, it's not like I am making them any better in combat or removing their need for food/Sleep/alcohol.

It's not exactly cheating, it's adding a different flavor to the game rather than giving a concrete advantage. More of a flavor mod.

I chain my sapient captives up and use them to train my melee dwarves instead of a danger room.

kill them or cage them, they're an annoyance and block cooler creatures.  Or better yet, mod the raws so they explode as soon as you load up the game.

They're annoying.  Kill them or cage them.  Modding them to be butcherable doesn't really help until after they're dead anyway.  If I'm going to mod the raws to deal with them (and get giant desert scorps) I'd take away their flying or make them explode upon load-up.  Particularly as butchering sentient creatures changes the flavor of the game quite a bit, no pun intended.
