The Second Galactic War started during the year of 4210, though the exact date is a source of much debate among historians. The general colony uprisings during February, the seizure of USEC ships in the Scutum–Centaurus arm during August, and the formation of the Union during September are all good candidates for the start of the war. The causes of the war are more clear then its starting date. Rampant corruption in the USEC, along with deep seated mistrust and a desire to gain control of hyperspace caused many south-eastern colonies to join the Union. The north-western colonies, having benefited immensely during the Age of Corporations, remained steadfast with the USEC. In between the two combatants a no-man's land formed, comprised of independent systems, small alliances and the territories of opportunistic warlords. While skirmishes occurred frequently after 4210, it was not until 4213 that major battles took place, as many pre-war USEC ships were fit for more than garrison duty.
-excerpt from Damina Behor's The Second Galactic War, 2nd ed.

Welcome ladies, gentlemen, and those with a non-standard gender identification. I am here to conduct several simulations based on the events of the Second Galactic War, to help you get a taste and feel for inter-planetary combat. After all, the lessons of the past must be secured to secure the future. Now then, I have ten scenarios set up for you all. The first two deal with the opening stages of the conflict in the Norma arm, and will be fairly simple, to help ease you into things. Next we have two scenarios at the opposite side of the galaxy, to introduce more complexities as the USEC and Union struggle for control of the independent systems. Then we'll move to the galactic core, to experience the thrill and unpredictably of interstellar raiding. The next three scenarios will detail the USEC thrust around the galactic core, the Union's retreat and counter-attack. As for the tenth scenario... Well, I'm sure some of you can guess what it'll be. Now then, any volunteers for the first mission?

((Any questions? I'm sure that I've left something important out. Also, feel free to ask for clarification about the various rules. Transferring them from my head to the English language has probably muddied them a bit.))

Reserving a ship.

EDIT: sorry, it may just be that I'm oblivious, but how does one balance their stats? do we take a minus for every plus, or do we have a certain number of points?

Ships are pre-defined for each scenario, so once we start you'll get a list of the different ships you can command. The first scenario has 15 ships for the USEC and 20 ships for the Union, but later ships will have much, much more. Oh, and you can command more than one ship, else we'll never have enough players.

((when in movement do planets add their accel? before or after moving? what if you move at high speed through a planet's area so you dont start nor end in it, does it do anything at all?))

Planets add their acceleration during the acceleration phase, or after combat but before ships actually move. Moving through a planet's gravity field does nothing, mostly for simplisticly's sake than anything else. Acceleration is only added when a ship starts its turn in the gravity well.

Interesting fact: I was thinking of doing a high-physics space game, too. I spent too much time on physicalizing it, before simplifying it, before deciding that keeping track of all that and figuring out how to make sure you hit the planet was too much work.

Do planets orbit stars? And how would you do the gravity-slingshot thing?

actual way or hilarious way?

actual way: start turn in planet's grav well, and have one accel towards one of the two adjacent squares in the planet's grav well. after that dont apply any accel until it is done turning you to the direction you want to be going, then apply one accel to leave the circle. if you use this to turn around, you spend a total of 1 fuel to get two points of accel in the direction opposite how you were facing at the start.

hilarious way: start the turn in the planet's grav well, with 2 or more movement points DIRECTLY AT THE PLANET. you'll shoot past it and have one extra accel you didn't have to pay for.

Yeah, I can see how that'd be a problem. I'm not sure whether the solution is to go as simple as I've done, but we'll see.

Do planets orbit stars?

Obviously, but it's not going to factor in the game. Though I will admit, calculating how to intercept a moving planet to get a boost is something that would please me.

-snip-

Lenglon has hit the nail on the head. And given how precious fuel is going to be, using gravity wells to your advantage is going to be important.

Excellent. With four people I'll definitively set up the first scenario tomorrow. Anybody else is welcome to join until then, of course.

So you've shown us ship-to-ship combat, how will ship-to-planet combat work?
Also, will we have boarding parties? I really like the idea of being able to board another person's ship, especially if we can have an actual floorplan of the ship, the only video game I've played that did this well was FTL, and thier ships are really to small for my liking, and with too few people involved.

I know you've said that our ships will be premade, but will we eventually, after you've gotten a better feel for this, possibly let us design our own ships?
Also could you show us some examples of the ships you've got written up? I know you'll most likely want to keep most of them a secret for when the two sides branch off when the game starts, but could we see, maybe, a low-ranking ship? Or a generic pirate vessel?

Sorry for the bunch of questions, I'm just curious, and I'm a fan of being able to personalize things.

Oh, speaking of which, although we will have stock ships, can we make minor modifications to them? Nothing major, just slight tweaking.
