Steam tradingcards
« on: May 15, 2013, 01:39:16 pm »

Well this came out of nowhere. A revamp of the steam profiles with cards earned through playing participating games that can be crafted into backgrounds, emoticons for wherever you type, game coupons and possibly other things.

http://steamcommunity.com/tradingcards

To join the beta for this you need to join the http://steamcommunity.com/groups/tradingcards/ steam group. Invites will be sent out via email in the order people join.

Just got one and sent you a pm.

edit: or you already got in :P

If anyone else is interested in an invite I have twothreeOne more, send me a pm with a link to your steam profile. They have to be traded in a similar fashion to the various coupons.

I don't really like the idea of turning my game playing habits into a game and then restricting the client features if I don't participate.   :-\

What exactly is getting restricted? It's basically achievements. It means nothing and is just fun to collect.

I have a bunch of invites as well.

Leveling up earns you non-tradable items like profile showcases, extra friends list slots,

Oh god, please don't let this actually affect functions of Steam. It's not like I have a kergillion people added on Steam, but I really hope this doesn't happen.

Ah right. I still don't see why it matters though heh. It's not like we've been suffering without those features to begin with.

Why not, I'll take an invite if you someone still has one available.

That said though this is something that I really did not expect steam to do, but so far they haven't made that many bad decisions (greenlight), so why not give it a shot.

Edit: ok nvm, I found someone on my friends list who had a few spare invites, so I don't need one now.

Well, at least this will make me play some of the games on my list that I haven't played in a while to get the cards, just like the summer sale where you needed to play games to get coal.

This sounds stupid.

It's the new Steam-themed casual achievement game.

Yes, it's stupid.

The only thing that has any real effect beyond being able to customize your profile page a bit more that I have found so far, is that you gain an additional 5 places on the maximum number of people you can have on your friends list for each steam level. If I recall correctly the base number of places is 200. So I've picked up an extra 55 spaces on the list and won't have to prune it quite as harshly.
