Getting Rid of Ghost
« on: May 14, 2013, 11:06:30 pm »

In my fortress, a guard for the dwarf caravan was roasted by a dragon, and he burned to death. His corpse also burned to ashes. However, after a while, he came back as a ghost. Normally I would just create a memorial slab, but for some reason this dwarf does not show up in the option for engraving a memorial. How do I get rid of this ghost?

*edit* I'm stupid this doesn't solve your problem since you can't see the name in the craftdwarf's workshop... I'm sorry : ( Maybe lock a disgruntled butcher in a room with him and hope he goes into a fell mood and makes him into a chain.
...
Construct a slab from a mason workshop, have it engraved with the name of the ghost from the Craftdwarf's workshop, and then build it somewhere.. I think that should solve it : ) but I have trouble with ghosts now and again myself.

The name of the ghost is not showing up as an option for some reason. That's the problem.

No problem Rogue Yun. More info: in the unit screen the ghost is marked as "deceased" although it is clearly floating around my fortress. I don't know if this indicates anything about the problem, or is simple a product of how dwarf fortress handles historical people.

*edit
Problem solved. I saved the game, and when I loaded it, the ghost had disappeared. Not even the record of the dead dwarf in the unit screen's "dead/missing section" remained. The only trace remaining is the coffin claimed by the ghost, which lists the "ghostly marksdwarf" as the owner. Weird.

I read a little about ghosts in the wiki, I don't think ghosts of caravan guards can be memorialized...  but hey can be frozen in ice and murdered by dwarves in fell moods... that is all I have.

Wait. Ghosts are vulnerable to obsidian/ice traps?

THAT'S interesting to know. I knew that the murderous/sadistic ones could, if you got lucky enough, be counterattacked to death, but this is a much easier way to effectively slay them. Wait for them to go haunt one of your dwarves, put them in a suicide squad and send them to the obsidian chamber, then lock them in and turn on the blast furnace. As long as the ghost doesn't pick a new target before the obsidian happens, and assuming this information is accurate, the ghost should perish.

If that doesn't work, DF hack has "tweak clear-ghostly" to deal with this case in particular--note that it has some bugs, such as the tile the ghost was last on being permanently marked as "occupied".

But if you murder the ghost, doesn't that compound the problem? Wouldn't you end up with the ghost of the ghost to get rid of?

I'm fairly certain that doesn't happen... Can't say for certain, as I've never actually killed a ghost, I'm just theorizing.

Perform some science! I'd do some myself, but I'm still getting my obsidianization chamber set up. With 19 dwarves. Half of which are childrens.

Did I mention we're in a terrifying scorching swamp with three towers? Oh, and we have no less than seven Forgotten Beasts. >.<;

If you can kil the ghost, you may also be able to kill the ghost's ghost.
Problem solved.

I will never forget the first time I saw a dwarf, sick in the hospital from a ghost attack, be later ripped in two by the same ghost, only to then discover the ghost had a grudge against this guy in life.

Ok, problem is not solved. I guess the ghost was just on a part of the map I couldn't see for a bit. Now it's back and randomly haunting dwarves. I read on the wiki that ghosts can be frozen, but my map is in a "warm" climate and the water never freezes. The ghost is still not appearing as an option for memorializing, and the wiki states that there is a bug preventing caravan guards from being memorialized. How do I get rid of the ghost before it rips someone's leg off?

What's the description on the ghost? Only certain subtypes of ghost ever become violent. The others just hang around annoying people.

In the past I've always been able to get rid of ghosts by opening coffins for general burial, or once the ghost is noticed by the civ, explicitly assigning them tombs. However, in my current fort I have a ghost still active despite being assigned a tomb. He's one of the merely-annoying kind but I'm getting, well, annoyed. I should probably upload the save to Mantis.

can the ghost be recruited into your fortress via dfhack? if so, maybe that will put him on the list of dwarfs that can be slabbed...
