Frigate Commander
« on: May 14, 2013, 10:49:37 pm »

Loosely based off of Lordship. Check it out if you haven't already.

It was a time of war. Countless planets were falling, while countless more were being gained. Nothing seemed to stop this stalemate. No matter what new technologies, engineering methods, or training regimes the Galian Empire has developed, the enemy seems to make up for it in their own way. The Galian Empire was losing too many ships along with their respective Commanders, and were growing desperate.
In their desperation, they confirmed a new project. Hundreds of new frigates were produced. The Command Training facilities went on overtime, and as a result, they hoped to eventually outnumber their enemy with skill, technology, and numbers. This was their hope, though. Whether it works or not is for time to tell.

"Ah, you. Finally. The ceremony is going to begin very soon, you better hurry."
You clamber up the steps from the chamber and into the light to see the rest of the Arena. A huge crowd of people were gathered in the Spectator sections, and mass amount of seating was placed in the center of the Arena. In every seat, sat a trainee; each in their uniform, sitting still; silent.
You quickly locate your seat and sit down, almost just in time for your name to be mentioned. What is your name? Who are you?
You've also forgotten what your specialty at the Academy was. You should put your thoughts together before you get called.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

I like the name, it is simple and informative. But, erm... "You command the Frigate ]Disturbia!"... "Free captain of the Squid-head nation!"...

We are Krannikas Sisarn.
We are the youngest child of a noble family who were sent here to win prestige in our clan's name. We are proud of our clan but weary of the politics of the noble households. Whilst defending our homeland is obviously the most important task of a naval officer, and our clan should be respected for its skill, we would rather that it not be dependent upon the overly-celebrated acts of a few noble celebrities and are somewhat disgusted to be taking part in it all.
We specialised in learning the enemy's tactics.

(looks like a promising game!)

We are Tallarn Syrt, a commoner. We were born and raised in a large family on a desert planet near the center of the empire. Gifted with a natural skill for strategy and tactics (your childhood friends still remember the humiliating defeats you inflicted them at command&conquer 387), you joined the fleet officers school. You are quite good at coordinating several units, and you know a bit of mechanics.

We are Krannikas Sisarn.
We are the youngest child of a noble family who were sent here to win prestige in our clan's name. Our clan is formerly known as House Apfrie, and we have a history of proud military service. Not to mention lengthy military business contracts.
We have turned down several safer assignments offered and slowed our career advancement to help out the cause in a more fitting way.
We specialized in learning the enemy's tactics, and adapting captured intelligence and technology for battle use.

I'll second rams, adding a bit of my own.

Though I don't really enjoy suggestion games all that much...we'll see how this one goes.

We are Raynor Syrt, a commoner. We were born and raised in a large family on a desert planet near the center of the empire. Gifted, we think, with a natural skill for strategy and tactics. Our childhood was spent helping our father with his fledgeling garage and whooping our friends’ butts in command&conquer 387 and EtherCraft 12, until they stopped playing with us (even 3 Vs 1), so we joined the fleet officers school. We are quite good at coordinating several units, and know a bit of mechanics. Also we tend to hear voices of our ancestors in our heads which tell us what to do (it is both a blessing and a curse, since while the voices will usually discuss any problem we face with the frevor of an Imperial Senate commission, they also tend not to agree on things)

+1, just to help move the stalemate along.

Ugh, no. I'm sorry but this backstory leaks grimdark all the way through the internet, and now my phone is dripping liquid grimdarkness on the ground, which I'm afraid will leave a stain.
Don't get me wrong: this is very well and deeply thought, and I'm sure some would appreciate it very much. But I am not into this sort of things. While I might like the "fallen house now practicing piracy, with us being the last strand preventing the damocles sword of the imperial navy to fall on their head" thing, the warmongering, hatred and incest part? No way. If this pass, I'll just leave.

Knowing this forum, I supposed in advance that including those things would be a bridge too far. I had to try, though.

I don't suppose we can meet half-way?  Otherwise, cue the predictable entry of space cadet Hero McHeroson, he of the square jaw and the righteous stare off into the middle distance. The "local peasant makes good" story that we've breathlessly been awaiting. :)

meh, incest is the only thing I find objectionable in that description (though it is a bit cliche'), and I can live with it, if we agree that this things is as uncommon in the Empire as it is in our IRL 'Western World'. In essence it should be a drawback for the character, not a line in his file.

Trannytas Syrt, known affectionately as Tranny to his friends?

The part where it gave negative traits was a clue that it wasn't considered normal. Nevertheless, I'm retracting the inbreeding part and everything in the fourth paragraph. House Syrt still has a few noble allies that find their depredations on rival Houses useful. Marriages to these houses remained available. I never said incest, btw. We'd have been free to change the isolated circumstances that caused the past incest, but we ourselves were merely inbred beyond our control. Born that way.

---

Actually, the OP never asked for a full backstory. Possibly he has his own idea, anyway.

Pretty sure it was a joke.

No incest/inbreeding (or at least very toned down: pale and thin yes, deformed head no)? Less "holed up in a fortress and hated by everyone" and more "former nobles now pirates hated by some, disliked by a lot but still having some friends"? I think I'm sold on the backstory.

See? Compromise!

Posting to watch. Will jump in when the character's background is solidified, because I imagine the game will be fun with whatever you all agree on.
