Luft 46
« on: May 14, 2013, 06:58:14 am »

Has anyone checked out http://www.luft46.com/?

Most of the designs there are so immeasurably awesome that they make me want to scream "Why did YOU GERMANS NOT BUILD THIS!? (I know, being trampled by the Allies, lack of resources, but still some of these were conceived in the 1930s for goodness sakes. The Germans actually had the opportunity to build a Mach 2.5 COAL POWERED fighter, so why in the all loving fucks did they not, or at the very least did the Allies who captured the plans not!?

Seriously, this site is pure awesome. And if you want to see some non-German aircraft look at some of the model companies on their links page, of which my favorite is Anigrand. I'm not saying you buy or anything, but the model companies have histories for many of the aircraft and X-Planes they feature.

Those are some bloody beautiful planes.

To be fair, I'm glad the paintings were all they got up to, some of those look suspiciously like modern aircraft o_O

German designers and engineers got lots of "opportunities" to continue their work for the allies and soviet union after the war, so there's a reason why those look suspiciously like modern aircraft.

I've heard of that website a long time ago. It's interesting to note how many jet fighter designs were influenced/inspired by original Nazi German designs.

I was browsing this site a couple of weeks back. Someone asked me to find out if the claims about Nazi flying disk designs were true and it turns out they aren't unless you count this:

I always thought this was pretty neat and ahead of it's time:

This one needs to be in War Thunder:

Edit:
The coal powered ramjet fighter could be considered a flying disk, for certain interpretations of disk:

I see what you mean, but it's still a far sight different from the UFO blueprints you get on Nazi UFO "documentaries".

I was continuing to read around, and apparently the Germans may, and I say may, have broken the sound barrier during WWII with a modification of the V-2. (If you look for this on Luft 46 it won't be there, it was on another site.) So the X-1 may not have been the first to break the sound barrier. (Chuck Yeager still would have been, even if the Germans had in fact broken the barrier, as the test flight was unmanned, despite the modification was made to incorporate a pilot.)

Some of those planes look very similar to the planes on Crimson Skies. Guess the makers drew some inspiration from these.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.
