Mainstream: The devs didn't think of it, so you can't do it.
DF: The devs didn't think of it, so it's hilarious.

Mainstream: "The game's getting slow, I should upgrade my graphics card."
DF: "The game's getting slow, I should sidegrade my processor."

Mainstream: Your armor's effectiveness is primarily a function of where in the game you found it.
DF: Your armor's effectiveness is primarily a function of what it's made of and how much of your body it covers.

Mainstream: Female characters are disproportionately useless, and pointing this out to fans is asking for harassment.
DF: The only difference between female and male characters is that female characters carry their kids around with them, and pointing this out to fans is asking for a strategic discussion about whether carrying kids around is an asset (baby shields) or a drawback (baby smoothies).

Mainstream: A "puzzle" usually means you haven't collected the item that will allow you to pass. On the high end of things, it's a simple logic problem that can be solved with 10 seconds of consideration or about a minute of blind guessing.

DF: There is one puzzle: figure out the logistics of feeding, protecting, arming, housing, policing and making prosperous a population of 100+ alcoholic maniacs with a death wish.

Mainstream:
You are a hero adventurer who follows a storyline as the main character and saves the world.

Dwarf Fortress II:
You can be whatever you want, there is no storyline and you can destroy the world if you see fit.

Mainstream RPG's: People's lives can only be fulfilled by the acquizition of dozens of mutilated monster body parts, and greatly appreciate those kind adventurers who go and fetch them.

Dwarf Fortress: People's lives can only be fulfilled by the comforting presence of very nice furniture, and greatly appreciate those who make it even if they just dropkicked their child into a volcano.

Mainstream Games: There's a set story for you to experience. Just follow these instructions...
Dwarf Fortress: Fuck that, let's rock.

Mainstream Games: "I just dueled a dragon in the most epic battle I've ever had!"
Dwarf Fortress: "My dwarf just killed a dragon then picked it up by its tail and used it to kill more dragons."

What's wrong with using magma? That's almost always the easiest method.
I have issues channeling it properly to do that method. I end up flooding the fortress with magma.

In actuality, only in Dwarf Fortress can you take an arrow to the knee and have it end your adventuring career, your tendons being too mangled to support a life-sustaining movement speed.

I just impaled a dragon with a dragon. Then I impaled another dragon with that impaled dragon. Then...
