Fortress mode: Okay, Done with all of my defences and general things....    Wait, why is a army....

Adventure mode: *Stab*  *Stab*   *Get stabbed by person with legendary swordsdwarf skill*

If DF was multiplayer, you would be only be able to start your fort for only like five minutes before the whole world cave in from some guy's megaproject.

Or your fort would get steamrolled by a self-aware automatic mobile fortress.

Kerbal Space Program: Watch as your giant awesome rocket explodes on the pad, but don't worry about the pilots, there's always more, and you can get it back up as soon as you change the design.

Dwarf Fortress: Watch as your giant magma flooder backs up, inundating the interior fortress and killing 126 dwarves, ending the session. Make the same weapon again with no alterations because it was Fun to watch.

well i this aspect KSP captures the real world very well. There will always be meatshilds monkeys labrats idiots Astronauts crazy enough to ride rockets (over the decades we tried to sell them space-elevators but noooooo they are not fun enough) the only problem is to find Astronauts with the right science degrees.

The launchpad situation is bit worse in RL if you have to rebuild it but often enough you have spares and they are pretty sturdy anyway.

Now imagine a KSP rocket crashing landing at your forts site.

Not saying KSP's bad, just comparing it to DF. You can do similar things in DF, it just takes longer.

...And can be gory to the extreme... I mean, who doesn't have a blood-painted fortress when things go really, really bad?

That must be a horribly disastrous flood to kill all dwarfs fast enough before they go into a tantrum spiral.

*Edit
Specifically when my fortresses flood there usually are some survivors... for a little while at least...

Putting all living space below the level of the cistern is a mistake you only make once... or probably not :D

Thank you, my girlfriend just woke up because I was laughing so damned hard, especially after the cats running your triggers thread...  It would only be perfect if you built a necromancer tower into the tailpipe so that everything you killed was raised as dead behind you, a form of scorched earth campaign...  :D :D :D

Mainstream (FPS in particular):
Game. On. Rails. given that those rails pass beautiful vistas and are nicely set to avoid running into a wall or coasting effortlessly.
Dwarf Fortress / Roguelikes:
Game rolling end-over-end in the middle of a world where you can hardly see, sometimes you enter a flat, smooth plains, sometimes there is a giant friggin' grand canyon in your path.

Mainstream:
Giant monster approaching! It is about to smash the village! Quick, activate the photonic cannon and call the player a hero!
Dwarf Fortress:
Giant monster approaching! It is about to smash the village! Quick, Think of something or we are all doomed.

Mainstream:
A carp attacks! It deals 2 HP out of 100.
Dwarf Fortress:
A carp attacks! There where no survivors.

Mainstream:
Shallow learning curve. Not much to learn, much to master.
Complex mainstream:
Steep Learning curve. Lots of minutia to obsess over.
Very Complex un-mainstream modded:
Learning Cliff, ever tried to figure out what all of the stuff in Minecraft Redpower does (I know most of it, I think)? What about what all of the numbers mean in Kerbal Space Program FAR (what is a IZZ Derivative of sideslip angle?)?
Dwarf Fortress:
Wait, You expected something to be there to climb? Yeah, right. Learning Invisible Floating island... on another planet.

Mainstream:
Crisp, clear cut storyline and rich pre-programmed side-storylines.
Minecraft:
What Storyline? Make one yourself? What is that, you need characters? have a Squidward or ten?
Dwarf Fortress:
Story? How about you make a world, and the real interactions between characters, other characters, and the environment will be your storyline, background, etc.

Mainstream:
I have been disarmed, but I still have my trusty iron ingot to smash over their head! What? it only does the same damage as hitting them with my fist?
Dwarf Fortress:
That's right, I killed that Elven son of a ***** by throwing his own leg at him!

Mainstream:
Dead bodies are real physics objects that you can sort of collide with!
Dwarf Fortress:
Dead bodies are real food objects ;D that you can also throw parts of at people!

Mainstream:
Look at this amazing combat, headshots, leg-shots, arm-shots, chestshots, abdomen-shots! Each deal a different amount of damage and take a different amount of time to recover!
Dwarf Fortress:
Our combat system has unit icons...
It also has livers, spines, eyeballs, teeth, ribs, nerves.... The list goes on. What happens if your arm flies off? That should be obvious! Your arm lands somewhere and rots there.

Mainstream: A sequel comes out in a year or two and brings incremental upgrades.

DF: A major update comes out around once a year and often flips the entire game upside-down.

Mainstream: A hiccup from 60 fps to 55 fps may cause fits of rage in some players.

DF: Watch as it transforms into a turn-based game when you try to do anything liquid-related on a large scale.

Mainstream: A water wheel works because it's a prop that serves no actual function under the hood.

DF: A water wheel works because it's being pushed by flowing water, powering an actual mechanism.

Common physics engine: Hilarious floppy spinny ragdolls! Overly hyperactive barrels! Horse drawn carriages bouncing along the countryside!

DF: Hilarious exploding goblin bits flying everywhere! bits of goblin getting stuck in other bits of goblin and imploding their skulls in! Squirting machineguns! Railguns that fire loads of socks into goblin faces! Birds shot down mid-flight only to land on the dwarf that shot them, caving their face in on landing! Did we mention the exploding bits of corpses?
