Mainstream stuff: We've got liquids that sorta look like water. It's all shiny and it flows around.

DF: We've got blue and red 7s, pumps, and ways to calculate water pressure. You can build a water cannon with that crap and flood the fortress with it when it backfires.

Mainstream: "We have realistic damage systems!"   *Gets shot at point blank in the face with a shotgun, and survives*

DF: "Stab someone in the chest?   Damaged his heart, mortal wound."

Yeah, every now and again it's nice to play something simple and pretty, but goddamn there's nothing quite like doing something in DF. In DF, things happen because you made them happen, not because you followed a pre-programmed path. Not that I'm actually good enough at the game to make anything too impressive...

Mainstream: Oh no! That character lost a leg because it was part of a cutscene and important to the story!

Dwarf Fortress: Oh no! You lost a leg because you decided to enter combat!

Mainstream: Press F5 to quick-save and F6 to quick-load.
Dwarf Fortress: If you REALLY want to, you can backup the save folder. Or deal with it. Preferably the latter.

Mainstream: models, textures, shading, particles etc.
Dwarf Fortress: ASCII symbols, bodyplans, materials, specific heat etc.

Mainstream: you can mod the game, but only to a limited extent.
Dwarf Fortress: you can throw out the entire base content out of the window and make your own. (as seen here

Mainstream: you -need- all the best gear and abilities to beat this beast!
Dwarf Fortress: where did I leave that boning knife and ice again?

Mainstream: a beast attacks your village because it's part of a prophecy and the storyline!
Dwarf Fortress: a beas attacks your fortress because you were dumb enough to breach the caves.

Mainstream: you can't burn down the forest because the wood doesn't burn!
Dwarf Fortress: go ahead, burn that forest. Just don't run away when pissed-off hippies charge at you. (DF2013 only, I guess)

Mainstream: You're a demigod and thus you can't die!
Dwarf Fortress: You're a demigod but that's no excuse for death.

Yeah...

AAA: Amazing game, ingenius features, revolutionary gameplay, awe-inspiring graphics. Attached to ruthless publisher who shells the game out on extremely limited and invasive terms, and plans to gut and disband the developer after the takeover is complete.

DF: A hermit living in a remote apartment is taken by a strange mood and works furiously to complete his masterpiece.

Mainstream: i am a good player at this game you see i've passed 1000hours and now i have the ultra/uber/hyper leveled warior/mage character, of course i also have all the maximised gear ...
DF Fortress: ... (who cares, make your goals) ...

Mainstream: You need a magical weapon to harm that creature.
DF Fortress: You need that the armor material of the targe is made from a material wich has less solidity and rigidness then the weapon if it is an edged one or armor needs to be not rigid if it is a blunt one, and then you can see that in an avarage rate the penetration value of said attack will be 60-80% but of course it depends also of the coverage of the above said armor, and ....

Mainstream: You can pretty much only do what the devs intended and pay shitloads of money for it while 9-year olds scream at you and insult your mum

DF: You do everything possible + more and it's free! Also, awesome community.

Urist McSnate likes malachite, copper bars, birds and goblinite for its abundance. When possible, he prefers to consume tea and toast. He absolutely detests elves.

A tall, clumsy creature fond of birds and industry.

CoD and Battlefield and stuff: Snipers snipe you from far away and brag about their l33t sk33ls while they insult your mom.

DF: You stab NPCs' kneecaps, break every bone in their body, and strangle them to death while in their pain-induced unconsciousness, all while insulting their moms.

Mainstream: Aw dammit a glitch!

DF: Awesome a glitch!

Mainstream: Tutorial levels, constant reminders, and incessant hand holding, learning curve is a slight gradient.

DF: BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Mainstream: I'm a level 80 warrior so only a level 80 enemy can defeat me.

DF: That fucking cow just killed me.

Mainstream: If I lose I'll just replay till I win.

DF: I am going to lose and I'm going to make sure I lose so badly everyone agrees I've won.

Mainstream : This [Insert boss name here] is the most dangerous enemy of the game.

DF : The most dangerous enemy is a giant sponge, which is also immortal.
