Mainstream: You're the guy that was foretold in the prophecies that will save the world!
DF: You're a common person that suddenly pulled off a global genocide. Or at least a local goblin one.
This is DF. If you tried that you'd get a spear to the leg that severs the ligaments and sensory nerves, sending intense waves of agony that cause you to black out and never wake again.
Or you just get stabbed in the lungs by a peasant with a boning knife.

Dark Souls: you die often, but come back as a zombie

Dwarf Fortress: you die often, and sometimes come back as someone else's zombie.

Or if you manage to actually escape, you'll bleed/suffocate to death anticlimatically. Or live the rest of your live as a crippled veteran.

"Mainstream" games: The main character gets a knife through the spleen, left lung and his kidneys.    "Ugh....   Antibiotics...    *Takes antibiotics.*   Time to kill [Insert games main villain here]!"

DF: Knife through the left lung. *Gasp*   *Long Gasp*    *Final stab at person who knifed you.*    *Miss and collapse.*    *Die*

You don't need to be good at video games anyway, right?

I think you mean "Little inexplicable box with red cross on it."

Wouldn't that be offensive in some regions of the world, and thusly banned?  Like seedless watermelons?  (It's a thing  ::))

For the longest time, healthpaks in games had some variation of the red cross symbol:

possible but for centuries it has been international convention to use a red a cross to symbolize a person who gives aide and should not be killed

In Western culture, and areas that have adopted such Western conventions, that is true.  In a number of states that have a prominant Islamist influence, a Red Crescent has been adopted of late.

Very recently a design that is intended to be totally agnostic (Red Diamond?) has been proposed.

So, follow the bouncing ball:

Knee jerk reaction to items that have been decided by fundamentalist clerics to be not OK get banned.

Red Cross seems like a likely candidate for some cleric to rail against.

In related news, in Saudi Arabia, seedless watermelons, grapes, etc. cause homosexuality, and have been banned.  YMMV.

IIRC, the Canadian Red Cross requested their symbol pulled from video games. At least in Doom, the cross has been replaced with a generic pill symbol.

Generic game: our mooks come with 3 different skins but are otherwise indistinguishable from another. they are here to be killed with out meaningful consequences.

Dwarf fortress: Virtually every enemy you encounter is unique. They still have the same symbol but under the hood they have wildly varying, physique, personalities (including Hopes to crush and fears to exploit), histories and skills. Also they family might take revenge.

Generic game: We have a quest-logbook and every conversation is recorded.
DF: You want a quest-logbook? Get pen and paper or learn engraving if you are dwarfy enough.

I think that another crucial difference between DF and other games is the community it fosters.

Other games:
Yeah! I have ___ points! More than you!
.....

Dwarf fortress:
Hey everybody, I just [drained the magma sea, colonized the circus, made a working computer, build a giant dwarf statue out of obsidian, weaponized ____ etc...]! Here's the full design so everybody can try!

Well, to be fair, I don't think Dwarf Fortress really compares to other games at all. A lot of games borrow from it, but there's really nothing out there 'sides Aurora that approaches the depth and complexity of Dorffort. Unless we're just bashing on mainstream titles.

I can, however, say that there are very few games out there with communities like this one.
League of Legends: "GET WRECKED" "ARE YOU EVEN TRYING?" "FEED ME"
Souls Series: "GET GOOD" "WAT R U CASUL?"
Touhou: "GRAZE MORE"
World of Tanks: "NICE GOLD, FAGGOT"

Meanwhile, the Dwarf Fortress community is, en masse, trying to figure out the best X for use in Y on Z all while having a collective chuckle at Nutsdangled the Brackish Fury the Donkey Leather Thong created in The Morsels of Pain in the year 263. Not that it doesn't have it's not-so-quality moments, though I thought
