-snip-
"Furry Uncanny Valley" for me is 9-10 (8 is borderline) and G. Just like robots, there are too many human elements in these.

Costuming seems to be fine, though.

Psychological Experiment
I didn't find any of those pictures disturbing or particularly weird.

1-10 are just anthropomorphic animals. Same goes with A-J, although the last ones are supposed to look at least sexy. Some of them are aesthetically pleasing, but I don't find them particularly sexually attractive nor creepy. Still to me they are just anthropomorphic animals with some attractive traits. *shrug*

The last two suits were silly and rather embarrassing (unless they they are mascots or trying to entertain kids or something) but again not disturbing.

Alright, psychological experiment.

I don't like drawing 5 on a more basic level, but 6 is where it starts getting strange.  I think it's the hair.

The sexy one I'm all over the place, there's ones in the lower and higher levels that Nope me out.  B, C, and G are the most unsexy of the group.

As for the costuming, the first two are fine but after that is a no.  For one, they're just so god damned hideous, especially that first.  And in general dressing up like a cartoon animal just generally freaks me out.

On a sort of related subject, when it comes to identity and the like, I am a huge fan of homo sapiens sapiens.  I think some of it is a reaction to the increasing popularity of boilerplate antihumanism among people who want to seem deep but have limited capacity for original thought, but in general I'm a big time humanist.

Taz, there is a very clearly defined neko (TECHNICALLY they are called kemonomimi) <---> furry spectrum, regardless of the way the two groups divide. Solifuge has even been kind enough to present this to us.
Another (not directly furry-related) XKCD: http://xkcd.com/1095/

I've been to various fan conventions over the years.  Family-friendly, so can't talk about the 'other end' of the costume use spectra (although what goes on in the hotel rooms... stays in the hotel rooms?), but am used to people in costumes wandering around in such environments.  From very simple (at one point I suspected that my non-costume dress was imagined to be a poor example of same...) to highly detailed.  And from full-covering to... well, some characterisations demand the (almost invariably) 'pretty young thing' to be (tastefully) displaying large amounts of flesh.  Sometimes that flesh has been coloured blue. ;)

Outside of such directly social environments... oh, I know what kind of stuff available on the Internet (and know that, for any given subject "...there is internets of it", even if I haven't stumbled across it).  Really, there are subcultures out there that are a lot more... well... moreso than the Furry stuff.  And a number where even deigning to compare them to Furriedom is beyond the pale.  Not my particularly my thing (as a fetish, though when part of the packaging wouldn't turn me off, either[1]), but everyone's different anyway.

Solifuge.  Re; those pictures.  Pretty much none of them 'squick'ed me.  Actually, probably the worst offender, if any, was the final Fursuit one.  And that because it appeared to me to be some sort of ensemble entertainment for kids (standard Holiday Camp stuff) that had, through the honest need to illustrate a point, been dragged into a fetish context and uncomfortably mixing the two concepts.  (Much more so than, say, the easily found unauthorised fan art of Disney characters in a sexual/suggestive context.  In this other case they're being depicted from scratch for this purpose and that's what the picture is of, even though the owners of the IP involved intend them to be exactly as asexual as those camp entertainers ought to be portraying their own 'characters'.)

If, on the other hand, I'm wrong and this is a Furry Convention picture then... Well, bonus points for getting the full suits, but I get no rise at all from that, myself.  Even discounting the above misconception, if that it is.  I assume you have to be there.  In the suit, probably. ;)

That aside, I have no problems with any of the levels depicted.  I've probably seen worse (possibly inadvertently, possibly not... do I want to make myself look like a prude or a letch?) which means that I'm desensitised to anything stronger that you'd still feel free to subject the forums to, anyway.  There's that and my age, probably.

(Woh.  12 (fakeedit: plus... and plus twice more, even while fakeediting) New replies since I started replying.  Sorry, today's a slow-editing day, for reasons explained elsewhere...)

[1] Along these lines I'll admit to having played about with the Corruption Of Champions (text only) flash-game.  Enough to know that while I'm not its target audience I'm not put off by it either.  Not so much as to stop me being overly analytical over the pure gameplay aspects, anyway.

I used to hang out with furries on a TF2 server.  Though the sprays they put up eventually made me have to disable sprays there.  They were all pretty cool folks, and consistently the highest skill server I knew of at the time.

Though that has me ask the question.  I usually use some kind of anthro dragon as my avatar when I can, I have modded an entire race of the things I play in Dwarf fortress, and I much prefer to play the beast races in games (Charr in GW2, Tauren feral druid in WoW, Amani in TERA, Argonians in TES).

I'm fine with all the pictures 1-10 and A-J.  Though J should probably cover up a little.

But I don't get into fursuits. That medium costuming is the most I would be comfortable with, and only meeting them, certainly not doing it myself.

So would that make me a furry?  Or scalie or whatever the narrowed down term is?

As far as my knowledge goes, yeah, you could be categorized as 'scalie' in the furdom :P

Ok, spiffy, nice to have that cleared up then.  I always wondered how to respond when somebody asked me if I was a furry or not.  I always responded with "Not really sure".  Now I have a better answer.

Hmm... I'll say 8, and E if given that E and D are switched (D does seem like they're trying to be more lewd.) and moderate costuming is acceptable. And G actually is more Neko than furry, although she might as well be 13 for all that can be known. B looks like he'd like her quite a bit, though. C is just bloody awesome and anyone who mocks others for investing that much effort in an art piece will be flogged.

Many of them are still pretty, beautiful, seemingly friendly, or aesthetically pleasing, but not attractive in a sexual sense.

I'll have to take the test later. Kiiiinda on a public network at the moment and don't want to risk losing access privileges if someone accuses me of looking at pornographic images (no matter how tame they might actually be >_> )

#10, probably cause I don't like the 'art style'.  (I am mostly dulled to this from old-time cartoons and anime.)
*Shrug* (Eh, internets and anime has dulled me to this.)
*Shrug* (Mickey Mouse and similar has dulled me to this.)

Yea, most this stuff just doesn't bother me.  I've been seeing stuff like this all of my life and have never been repulsed by it or any of the likes.
Though, when I was a bit younger and dumber, I did hold prejudice against furries just cause everyone else spoke ill of it.

Also, in games, I almost always pick the human characters over all other races, if there is a choice.

I suppose I could also state that none of them actually freak me out to any extent. Hurray for desensitization via interweb horrors? I could probably stare at these all day, and as long as I'm not forced to look at actual porn, with naughty bits shoved out there for the hell of it, or into others' personal space, I probably couldn't care less. B is still the creepiest of them. :P

#3, #4, #6, #7, #9, E, G, H, I, J, and half suit and up made me feel a little uncomfortable.  Which is odd because...

Spoiler: *spoiler* (click to show/hide)

I noticed a lot of those are female anthro's, that could be one reason why.

Will you at least participate in the Psychological Experiment part? I had to sift through a not insignificant amount of crappy artwork and fox-person smut in order to put that together. I'd like to at least be able to pretend something good came from it. :I

Of the numbered only 4, 6, and 7 gave me "off" vibes due to clashing features, but nothing felt too out of place. The others either fell into the cartoon category or came from a fantasy setting where their existence didn't seem out of place and their design held together in a way that didn't feel like some insane surgical experiment.

G and H were creepy for different reasons, G for being creepy in a more traditional sex object way to an extent that made me uncomfortable and H in a furry sex object way that feels incredibly unnatural. The other ones featuring a demure fox girl/woman were also slightly off, but not at the level those other two were. I'm not sure if it's entirely the sexy poses that are causing my discomfort for those however, as I really like J.

Fur suits went from cosplay to mascots. I'd have trouble taking the latter seriously without effort on my part but otherwise nothing made me uncomfortable.

This is often how women (and conscientiousness men) feel when checking out things drawn by men that have certain parts exaggerated.

The more you empathize. :Db

None of those were 'uncanny valley' for me.

I don't think I have an uncanny valley, because things most people consider uncanny valley territory are perfectly fine for me.
Pretty much this. Only things that really seem to consistently squick me is guro (and associated subgenres) and most illustrated yaoi (and... honestly, the squick on that latter has lessened over the years. I've always been down with it, s'just not particularly to my tastes, and my tastes seem to becoming somewhat more inured as time goes by.). I kinda' consider myself strongly omnivorous, so to speak, in relation to that sort of stuff (both fetishized and not), at this point. It's not so much I'd call myself furry as I kinda' like everything. With the post soli threw up while I was writing this, I'd be giving thumbs up to both sets, as well as stuff that was completely non-fuzzy (as in human, not, say, naked mole rats or something.). Why limit oneself to particular sets of sexy or awesome if you could be enjoying all of them instead?

With the costumes, though, the latter two just... not sure, didn't do much for me? One of those, "Iffin' dat's yer kink, go for it." things, I guess? Now, one of the other things I've seen on that end of the extreme involve very impressive body paint and varying accessories and... that gets kinda' nice. Problem for me with the fursuits is less the sentiment or the style itself and more how they fit, really. Gimme' skin tight or body mods (though we haven't really reached that point in terms of technology, yet.) and we're talkin'.
