So my first vampire got stuck in a cistern-intake pipe...
« on: May 12, 2013, 09:46:01 pm »

So I've started a new fort with the intention of water-based traps and utilities, I've got my first cistern up and running before I get a message that one of my miners has gone mad. Sure, there's been lots of death lately, but I've got a legendary dining room and lavish meals and drinks, you think she'd get over it over meal time. So I zoom to her location and there she is: raving in the middle of the intake pipe under 3 Z-levels of flowing water I checked her stats and history and well...

She is clearly a vampire. A vampire stuck in my water supply. Is it safe to leave her there or is there a risk of her hurting herself and bleeding into the hospital water?

Your fortress year is 161? Please let me have done the math correctly.

The only difference between a human student and a dwarf is that dwarfs have the ability to create and destroy matter.
So will the dwarf with the broken spine recover and use a crutch?

She's not a vampire.  She wouldn't be thinking about thirst or wells if she was a vampire.  Not sure why she hasn't drowned though.

If she was stuck in variable-depth water for a while, she should have acquired swimming skill by now. As long as there's open air above her, she won't drown.

... of course, i don't know which mod you're using - it might give dwarfs natural swimmer skill or allow them to survive without breathing or somesuch. But by the looks of the thought page, weenog's right, she's definitely _not_ a vampire.

another reason it is probably not a vampire; slept in a good bedroom lately

I recall some talk about fixing those things to make it harder to spot a vampire some time ago, but I think that was only the "hasn't had a drink in ages/forever" thought. Vampires still don't get thoughts about getting thirsty and don't sleep. In fact, one way to find a vampire is by checking bedrooms. Unless you manually assign a bedroom to each dwarf, which is not recommended, each dwarf will pick their own bedroom from available ones. Since vampires don't get sleepy, they never pick a bedroom

Just curious: what made you think she was a vampire?

Considering these are dwarves, you can't blame them.
