Let's Play as a Norwegian Duke in Crusader Kings 2
« on: May 10, 2013, 07:53:11 am »

I've decided to do a let's play of Crusader Kings 2 and any and all feedback is appreciated.

The LP starts with a custom ruler (Marcus Bergheim) as a Duke in Trøndelag, Norway. The goal is to become Emperor of Scandinavia, or die trying, by the end of the first season. I decided that loosing my primary holding for any reason would end the campaign. I used three mods:

Patrum Scuta
Family Relations
Council Shuffling

Other then that I will only edit the game if it crashes. (And it did due to a patrician dying without an heir, but I fixed that.)

I am by no means a good player and I'm an even worse commentator, but this is my first LP so bear with me. The first few episodes run around 40-60 minutes. but I've cut that down to ca 25 minutes per episode.

So far the LP stands at about 60+ hours and season 1 is just about done. Time will tell if there is a season 2. ;-)

For those who just want to see the Crusader Kings 2 LP, go here:

Other then the CK2 LP there are a few videos I made with my wife where we play "other games". *shocking*

We are doomed. It's just that whatever is going to kill us all just happens to be, from a scientific standpoint, pretty frickin' awesome.

Is it just me, or is there a disproportionately large number of people who play as Scandinavians in CKII Let's Plays?

I think Paradox, being Swedish, has a large Scandinavian following. And a lot of people enjoy playing as their own country. Out of all the Paradox games (with the possible exception of Sweden in Europa Universalis) Crusader Kings 2 is the only one where that's really viable...

But in general I think Holy Rome, England and France are more common.

I find anything, that is not a republic, boring and devoid of possibilities. Hoping the next DLC changes that, making Pagan Viking Robots a viable option too.

How do you mean "devoid of possibilities"?

During peacetime, one usually speeds up the time flow until something happens, having nothing to do. I find rulers who are to be played above speed 3 unacceptable!

Take Venice, for example. I took Sicily, Croatia and won the first crusade - gaining Kingdom of Jerusalem - by 1094. It took 6 hours of slow playtime to secure all that, but that's a nation that has the options.
Some random manure paved village in 11th century Norway, does not.

Fighting Pagans or Heathens is fun, but you cannot be at war 24/7. Everything will collapse.

I don't think I went above speed 3 before my third ruler... I was at war or looking for ways to expand and managing my vassals and dynasty constantly. There was very little "downtime" to speak of, but that might have more to do with my playstyle.
