In real life, asbestos is mined out of the ground in the form of chrysotile, then processed into wool-like fibers by pulverizing the stone. Historically, asbestos was used by the Persians for various purposes, including textiles.

Conclusion: given the right deposits, we could plausibly mine fire-proof cloth out of the ground. I recommend this for inclusion in the game.

That is something that would be relatively easy to mod in, I suggest you ask around the modding forums for someone who's interested in doing it for you.  Otherwise it's not really groundbreakingly 'needs to be in vanilla df' tho some type of anti-dragon fire armor could be cool..

Then in that case dragon hide should be fireproof and insulated against heat. Imp hide on the other hand should be fire proof but not insulated against heat, I suggest.

Ahhh the implementation of the mesothelioma syndrome. More !!FUN!!! for everyone. Of course it's perfectly reasonable to assume that various resistances are already planned, the thing is that that's more of an infrastructure thing when Toady is still getting the superstructure nailed down. Of course you never know when he'll touch on a particular topic since everything eventually bleeds together. As far as Dragon scale goes, I'd see that as a special high level resource for producing planned lesser-artifacts and that it would give more than a heat resistance perk since certain stones and metals could give you that much with a weight penalty in most cases.
