I just had a wave of 29, being new that is a huge slap to the face, had to abandon because of lack of food and not enough time to make more beds. Just as i was finishing my outer wall ;_;

Should have made them all fisher/gatherer/farmer dwarves.

48, half of them didn't get actual jobs till years later.

40-50 I think. I was streaming at the time, and had 13 Dwarves, went to look in therapist, and I was up to like 60.

Though I pulled out perfectly fine, luckily. I was actually really exited too look through their skills for some possible military badasses.

Send some of them hunting (Make a crossbow at a bowyer's shop and bolts at a craftsdwarf's shop) and make a temporary dormitory for them to sleep in.

It's okay if a few dwarves die. It's also inevitable in a lot of the FUN places.

Build coffins or, if you're into space conservation, engraved slabs. Coffins block pathing and require you to actually have (a piece of) the dwarf's body on hand, and I'm fairly certain necromancers can do shenanigans with them. However, some nobles require a tomb be designated for them while they're alive.

Of course, I don't think they can actually DO anything if you burn their body and inscribe an anti-ghost slab for them....

I'm getting around 8-12 per wave now, but this is also the longest I've kept interest in a fort. I'm considering making some dwarves sleep outside because I don't want to build dormitories and make my fort even more disorganized.

My first time trying an aboveground fortress, I had a wave that swelled my ranks from somewhere under 20 to somewhere over 70 in the first year.
Then the necromancer attacked and we were back to 5.

So I guess it doesn't count?

53 is my record. It's wasn't' much a problem, however. All I needed to do was set everyone to gather plants from outside until farming was up and running.

I remember dicking around one day and making a candy mountain via DFhack which shot my wealth right through the roof. It caused roughly 50 migrants to show up at my doorstep in one wave. Damn shame I closed they bridge and they got eaten alive by the undead patrolling outside.

My current fort had a 32 and 37 dwarf migrant waves back to back.  More than half were children =(  At one point my fort had 3/4 children to adults due to a massive amount of births (almost all my adults were married) and the amount of children migrants (my first wave was 3 adults 8 children for instance).

Holy balls and butts! That's a lot of Dwarves you have there. I'd like too see someone try to top that.

Remember, dwarves produce resources. A large immigrant wave is only a problem if you are on an absolutely desolate embark. As others have said, set them farming/hunting/fishing/working and you'll be booming with food and crafts.

It's no big deal if they have to sleep on the ground a couple times, or don't have chairs for awhile. They won't be ecstatic, but they won't become unhappy just from that, either. I rarely even make bedrooms for the first couple of years.
