"We are indeed the help you sent for, and that 'commotion' is in regards to the rather large amount of creatures that are coming to destroy this town right now. While we were on our way here our boat got attacked, and not by Icthys either, whatever attacked us we've never seen before and there is a lot of it, I think that is a fairly good reason for the commotion. Of course we're going to help you, but we'll need your cooperation."

Ramus says, readjusting his grip on his sheath as he waits for the man's reply.

"...uh, what did you have in mind of cooperation? What should we do? This is all sort of sudden...we just needed you to clear out the Icthys nest to the North...what's the rest of this?"

Ramus ran a hand through his hair as he replied,

"I guess I wasn't clear enough, there is a horde of frog creatures coming towards your village to destroy it, if we don't stop them everyone in your village will die. The nest to the North is the least of your worries right now, as for cooperation I mean that letting us lead anyone that wants to defend this village since we have more experience dealing with this situation. If you want proof you can go back the way we came and take a dip in the water, I'm sure they wouldn't mind an easy meal, do you understand the rest of it now?"

The mayor scratches his scalp in return, causing his hair piece to fly askew.

"...b-b-but we don't have anyone who can fight here! We're mostly retired folk...tradesmen and craftsmen...that's why we hired you! I mean, my boys the closest thing we have to a soldier and...for the Gods sake, where's your helmet?!"

"I was having it polished!"

...

You get the distinct idea that this town is utterly unprepared for any invasion. Indeed, as you look back, panic has set in-most people seem to be of the merchantly type, and are stuffing their treasures in chests, boxes and bags-preparing to flee.

Ramus said quickly as he turned and stalked towards the door, stopping only to wait for everyone's answer as he replied to the being,

 'That is what I planned on, whatever you are I will tell you now I will not bow to you, I will not fall to my knees and do your bidding whenever you command. Before all else I am a free man, and I will do what I can to protect the innocent, if you go against my beliefs I will oppose you even though I may be a mortal I will not be used for evil by anything or anyone.'

Ramus chuckled under his breath at the words as anger and sadness filled him once again, 'Not particularly, but Elanora didn't seem that way either and look what happened there ...'

Wendell knew this was life or death.

That mage didn't look like he had anything particularly nice in store, and the hunters, though unlikely it would be for them to win, would probably skin him alive.

It was life or death.

Wendell grunted ("Damn mages, damn it..") and worked his way out of the invisible bindings, or tried to.
Attempt to break free of the bindings.

Curnrow shrugs-unwilling or unable to share his wealth-but Albrecht reaches into his robes and pulls out an engraved silver haircomb.

"What can I say, this hair doesn't take care of itself." He comments drolly, leaving to organize the defense.

...

The Mayor nods somberly.

"Ah...the Kingfisher? She's sheltered down in the seaside shrine...around back, you'll see. I'm not sure she'll like being bothered at this time, though..." He says a bit tensely.

"I wouldn't like to be bothered either, but either way she's gonna get a rude awakening with them damnable monsters on their way here, and I don't quite care how she'd feel about me visiting when people's lives are at risk."

With that he tucked the comb into his pouch and began to make his way to the seaside shrine.

Rankar looked at Caellach, feeling mildly surprised. He did not know why he was surprised - his friend had been there when he'd touched the stone - but he was, somehow. He pushed the thought away.  According to the man, he'd been standing there for half an hour. The stone must have done something, but he did not know what. He certainly wasn't feeling any different. Still… His companion was right. The place felt wrong, like there was something here not meant to be.

After Caellach spoke, something interrupted him just as he was beginning to answer. A voice. He could swear he had heard a voice, but a quick look at his friend told him he had not shared the experience.  Best… Not disturb him. Still, he wished to move on. Leave this place, follow the path of steel, find the crown. Somewhere in between those two, sit down and collect some thoughts in his notebook. Yes. Writing would do him some good.

For now, though, he had best focus on the matter at hand.

"I'm fine, Caellach… But I agree with you. There's something off about this place. The sooner we'll leave it, the better."

With that, he started walking down the path. Once again, he was going into the south. He remembered, from the first time he had seen the path of steel, that after reaching the summit, their pace would accelerate. Perhaps he should find his friend a horse once they reached the plains below the mountains. It would take some time for his companion to become used to riding, but with the human on a horse and the Kasar on foot, they should at last be able to travel at the same speed.

That could wait, however. He had to leave this place first. He hoped the feeling would leave him once the stones were far enough behind him.

Keep on going south along the path.

...Iooaef aeuay ili'g ki'lalj gv foyuay? the words echoed soundlessly in her ears, and, for a moment, she stared at the Kasar, trying to think. It wasn't angry at he-...

The machinations of her mind stopped dead in their tracks, the gears freezing over with fear and panic. Something, or someone was in her mind, her most hallowed place.

Out.

It was a simple thought, but one that had all the force of her consciousness and as much of her unconsciousness behind it as possible. Anger boiled up, covering the fear she felt with rage and fury, pure and simple.

OUT.

The matter with the Kasar pressed on her mind, and she spoke simply, a little too sharply to the man...bull...thing, voice harsh for all but a second, before she remembered what she was talking to. She ignored the gesture to hop down, watching the minotaur, but putting all her mind to expelling whatever was in her head.
"I'm sorry friend, do you speak (Insert language here.)? It's the only one I speak.."

Anathema stroked the gauntlet, discontented with his findings. Control of birds. A strange purpose, though better than no purpose at all. Still, it felt... incomplete. An odd purpose, for an artifact of such age. Nothing is as it seems at first glance, boy. There is more to discover, for this and the amulet, but the day is fading away. He knows enough to brave the hidden portion of the city, but mundane needs must take precedence for now.

Anathema forages for some of that tasty-looking fruit he had seen earlier, eating enough to sate his hunger and setting some aside for the morning. The night is warm, and the ruins provide shelter from the elements. Still, Anathema hesitates. The animals seem to be staying away, but there is no reason they wouldn't move in at nightfall. Unless, of course, there is a reason. Something that could drive away jungle predators might be dangerous to Anathema as well.

Surveying his dwelling, Anathema crafts Invidia and Luxuria into a surrounding ward. Invidia, to detect when a creature crosses the perimeter. Luxuria, to wake and warn Anathema in his mind, so that he won't be caught unaware. He snarls angrily as he crafts his magic. Not good enough, boy. Again. Magic shouldn't be this laborious. Almost. Again. Magic was in his bones. Sloppy work, there. You're lucky it even formed. Again. Anathema claws at his shattered memories, chasing figments that hint at how to achieve his goal. Again!

Ramus Thirdfallen heads toward the shrine, offering in hand-around the mayors house, he finds a large hillock made of strong bricks, covered in fine earthwork and grass. It has the impression of having been here much longer than the city itself. A small entrance beckons within, leading down into a hollowed out center. Ramus notes that the top of the shrine is a skylight, open to the air.

He walks forward dauntlessly, going down a flight of wide steps-feeling the strange presence that had helped him earlier pressing at his mind-almost as if his body is being controlled from afar, while he still converses with it.

Within, he finds the Kingfisher herself.

She is something much like what Ramus has heard a River Dragon looks like, though this is the first time he has done so personally. Thick green scales adorn her back, and her belly is pale, gleaming white. Her snout juts out in a crocodilian fashion. Her tail is almost as long as her body, and from end to forehead there are tall, triangular, sharp edged plates-her tail is a long spear, ending in a bony paddle which reminds you of a four flanged mace. It lashes the water, rattling softly. Her claws are impressively sharp and jet black, though they are tipped around webbed fingers and toes. Around her are a few small piles of silver treasure, which are protectively wrapped in her coils. All in all, she is about larger than the mayors house-yet she seems altogether more lithe and supple, than brutishly strong. Perhaps that is the way you tell a female dragon from a male one?

As you enter, sending ripples through the knee deep water the Kingfisher rests in, one great sapphire eye pops open-then narrows, concentrating on you.

"...I said I did not wish to be disturbed." She says, in a low pitched and rumbling (and quite frankly terrifying) voice. You notice she had no large fangs, but her mouth is wide and loose-a dark purple tongue ticked with adhesive spikes lays coiled within.

Rankar leaves, shelving his feelings of misplaced doubt. The Path of Steel beckons, stronger now in his mind then ever. He feels that if there was a test to be taken here, he has done so...

Caellach tags along, having learned a wider stride and an impressive endurance in an attempt to keep up with his horned friend. Together, you march past the sedated vines-through the hidden pass, and onto the next leg of your journery

You sense, in time, Caellach wishes to speak to you about something-a casual silence indicating heavy thoughts. You nod, imperceptibly, and he begins. Such things you have both learned on the trail.

"Hey. At least I got an half hours nap, eh....though, I had a weird dream. Tell me if this means anything to you, Master Rankar. Apologies if it's too literal, but the memory is still pretty fresh....

I was back in the village, right? You know, that night...only like I was a lad again, could barely swing a sword. I saw this man coming at me, a fat sod-a big guy, lots of meat on him. He's slow but strong. So-I hit him with my blade, right in the belly, but he doesn't go down-bleeding like a stuck pig, but it hit the armor he was wearing under his coat.

He swings his axe down on me, still, laughing like a loon. This is where it gets weird.

One second, I'm dead. He bashes my brains out, and I taste copper. Hurts bad, goes dark. I think I hear my Dad and my mothers voice. Last thing I hear is him laughing, and going through my pockets. Steals the necklace my mother gave me, the one I have now.

But...then I'm not dead. You're there-you catch the axe handle with your hand before it hits, knock the fellows head about off with your own axe.

Then, I'm dead again, and it's all quiet...and cold. I see you running past me, like you're chasing something...or running away. I can't move, but it doesn't hurt anymore.

Then...I'm alive. We're fighting alongside each other, fighting for the village. We watch each others back, get everyone together to take on the bandits.

Then, quiet and cold. I'm in a hole in the ground. Somebody is throwing dirt in a grave, over my face. It looks like the old man, who ran the forge with you. I'm laying down with...my family, from the old place. My mother and sister. It's not too bad, being there. Feels...sort of peaceful, oddly.

Then I'm above the grave, helping to shovel in dirt, alongside you...burying my mum, and my sister.

It gets fuzzy, and the dream starts all over again...that's pretty weird, huh?"
He says, raising an eyebrow.

...

In time, Rankar and Caellach will crest the mountain-looking down upon the green lands beyond.

Solbryn calls down in Midlish (name WIP), the common Human tradetongue of the lands.

The beastman shrugs mightily, repeating his gesture-pointing to Solbryn, and then downward in an axe chopping motion.

Aethla whispers to you, perched tightly on your wrist. Her tiny claws dig in, sharp, but not painful.

"Uh, I can speak Harpette, Midlish and Aertounge (the last one is the language of avians and those beings tied into air element)...but not whatever that is. What should you...we do? He can't come up and get us, right...but, I guess he could cut the tree down..." She comments.
