Ramus shakes his head and quickly replies as he switches the weapons in his hand to the other hand,

"Albrecht if you can use that magic of yours to blast the hell, if you can't just run like hell we're going to the village. NOW!"

With that Ramus wheeled around placing the scimitar in its sheath as he started to pelt towards the direction of the village staying as far from the shadows and the water as he possibly could.

Run for the village like my life depends on it, since it sorta does.

Rankar wished he had his notebook. So many thoughts to gather. So many choices. It did not matter. He had already made his, for good or for worst. The past could not be changed.

"Which blade, boy? Do you mean… This one?"

Slowly, he took the knife - it really looked like it could have been a toothpick for him - and he got down to  one knee, putting himself at equal height with Caellach. He smiled, seeing the lad's face light up.

"It's a gift, boy, for your birthday. Take care of it - it took a lot of time to make it. I hope it will serve you well."

It would not. It may very well lead him to his death. He might be killing the boy right as he spoke, he and his pride, he and his stubbornness. But his choices, his mistakes, and his regrets were all his - and nothing could change that.

The past could not be changed. He had to live with it and face it, rather than flee from it.

He gave the blade to the boy.

Bryn shut her eyes, a small smile creeping onto her thin lips. She rested back against the tree, leaving her wrist supported by a small branch for the harpy perched upon it. She tried to sleep; it'd pay her less if she'd stayed awake and survived only to die from falling asleep on the road.

And, if left unbothered, she slept until morning, high up in the tree, laying on a branch as wide as her, hidden by the massive leaves. Luckily, she was a still sleeper, and a quiet one, both of these habits ingrained into her by the rough years on the road.

Sleeeep.

Anathema idly twirled the flute in his hands, considering his items. The amulet was useful, no doubt. Knowledge is power. The flute would have its own uses, once he was equipped to entertain guests. But the gauntlet...

Anathema scowled at the gauntlet on the ground before him. It held its secrets as fast as the Khreki Regiment at the Pass of Thyma, but Anathema had time on his side. The illusion surrounding the spike had persisted for centuries, surely- perhaps millennia. It could wait one more night.

Struggling to regain his calm, Anathema once again probes the gauntlet, attempting to identify its purpose.

Ramus Thirdfallen nods to Albrecht.

"Only a charlatan uses such unsubtle tactics all the time, my friend." Albrecht says, tossing a small grey glass orb from a hidden pocket at his feet.

A few moments later, a thick fog rolls out from the cracked glass-it quickly grows large enough to obscure nearly the entire shore. While you can barely see anything your friend guides you out-away from the eyes of the hunting creatures.

...

Time passes. Perhaps an hour, or two. Neither of you dare look back.

Ramus spots the sign first...

Quote
Welcome to Palanq!
Population: 37
Taverns/Lodging/Entertainment
Travelers welcome all year!

And a small advisory recently tacked beneath.

Quote
Adv.1:Be wary! Icthys spotted nearby.

Adv.2:The Kingfisher has demanded this yearly tribute early and will be residing in the village for the next month. All visitors be warned, our local protector enjoy silver goods, and may demand audience or favors with any strangers.

Not knowing what to make of it, the pair continues on.

...

Palanq lies ahead-a small, prosperous town that relies on trade to fund a steady stream of wealth. It's hardly a dozen buildings large. There are no walls, but a few bored looking young man stand on the perimeter. They wave at you, exchanging papers amongst themselves-no doubt checking the documents and expecting you to be the mercenary help they hired to deal with their problems.

Perhaps they should have hired more...

----
Rankar continues on the path he once tread.

Caellach smiles wider, then suddenly remembering to give a thankful half bow.

"Master Rankar, this is a wondrous gift...I promise, I will train every day...and make the memory of my father proud." He intones.

Rankar says nothing, but only smiles sadly...whats done...

...

"...is done, Kasar." The Old man says, flicking blood from his sword casually. At least a dozen men lay dead by his hand. He had not so much killed as stepped through them, steady as rainfall, felling two or three in the space of a single second.

He reaches down and pulls a dagger from his belt. Within a moment, the padlock holding Rankars chains are undone. It was only the Old Mans timely intervention that had kept him from a life of slavery that night.

Screams. Fire. Smoke. The night of omen. The night the city burns.

"Well, at least they didn't hurt you. I suppose they wanted you for other reasons." He says, rolling out his shoulders. The Old Man smiles grimly, kneeling down and inspecting his work. And yours.

"Huh, you got two. They were just kids, you know? Don't even have proper armor. Pity.

...anyway, there's not much of us left, Kasar. I'm going to try and gather up who I can, anyone whose left. We can't win...no, but we can draw. Which is good as anything.

You can go, or you can stay, it makes no difference to me. Perhaps you want to get something, huh? It's all going to burn, so if you want something you'd better go get it quick."
He says, face stony as ever.

The Old Man reaches into the forge and picks up a Kasar sized axe from the weapon bin, holding it with no difficulty. He offers it to you, without another word.

One final choice.

Rankar knows what he did that night...he had fled without another word...but this time, this time...maybe things can change...maybe he can save someone...anyone...

----
Solbryn

[8]

Despite her fondest hopes, Solbryn is woken up unexpectedly around midnight-judging the position of the three moons.

Aethla is tugging on your wrist worriedly, speaking in a whisper. Well, she's probably just talking normally to you in her own voice.

"Sobri, there's a um...ugly horned man down below us...he's got a spear...as long as you are..."

Indeed, a young Kasar is prowling about below the tree you reside in, checking the ground and occasionally looking up-though he apparently hasn't found what he's looking for. From time to time, he takes a handful of soil and leaves and gives it a sniff, then sometimes places some of the leaves in a satchel hanging over his shoulder, as if collecting something. Then, the beastman continues moving in your general direction.

He's much larger than you, yes. His twohanded spear has an axehead on one side, made of brightly polished bone. Painted all over his thick fur are red striped markings, giving the appearances of slash marks.

A grim look took over as he read the sign, whoever this Kingfisher was Ramus got the feeling he wouldn't be to happy about Ramus attempting to take over here, but it was either that or people died. Ramus reached up and took his sword, sheath and all, from his shoulder and held it in his hand as they grew closer to the village before turning to Albrecht and Curnrow as he started talking,

"Whoever this Kingfisher is I don't think he's going to like us marching in and claiming the town for the day, but you know as well as I if someone with experience doesn't take over here things will turn out badly. Albrecht, Curnrow can I count on your help if things turn bad with this Kingfisher?"

Death and chaos, all over again. Why did he have to go through all this again? His will was waning. He had refused the chance, however slim, to avoid this disaster. He had sent Caellach to his death. And now this place, his place, was burning all over again. Memories were coming back. Dark ones, replacing the happiness a short time with the Old Man had brought him.

He remembered it all. He remembered the smell of ash, the blood on the ground, the bodies… Too numerous to count. He remembered running, fear, and he remembered looking from a distance at the smoking ruin that had once been a place where he could live in peace. It was simple… Refuse the axe, run, end it all. End the games, the test. His choices, his mistakes, his regrets. They were all his. The past could not be changed. His choices, his mistakes, his reg-

No.

He had changed. He was not the fearful smith who had fled a burning town in the past. He had learned to embrace fear since then, and today he would not let fear rule over him again. The past may not be possible to change, and he may fail the test - whatever test it was - but nothing was worth watching as his world burned all over again, when this time he knew he could do something.

The morals could burn, the wisdom could burn, the mantra could burn. He would reflect on it later, rationalize it all later. Now was not the time for logical thought. His home was burning again. This time, he would fight. This time, Rankar Alseroth would not flee.

With a determined look, he took hold of the axe.

Curnrow is a bit less enthusiastic.

"I'd more or less not, especially if I'm not getting paid. But we'll see, right?"

She watched the creature snuffle forward, drawing a knife, assuming the harpy could take care of herself in the get in the pouch. She straightened on the tree branch, putting her back against the trunk, relaxing her body slightly, slowing her breathing to a steady pace.

She hoped, quietly to herself, that the Kasar hurried off back to its clan so she could get back to sleep, but, knowing her luck, the thing would skewer the banch in front of her. Or want a fight, probably thinking she was the harpy, which was now huddled in her pouch, peeking out over the top.

Her jaw ached from speaking so much, and she'd probably regret this, but she spoke up, calmly calling down in as usual, polite, chipper tone, "Greetings Mighty Kasar. Bit late to be walking in the woods, isn't it? Dark things lurk in these places."

"Although I'm sure you're strong enough to handle them...don't mind me, though. I'm just resting 'fore I hit Spearmount."

Ramus smiled slightly at Curnrow's response, he worried more about his pay and his own hide then others problems sometimes but Ramus still liked the man, he was reliable enough and Ramus found himself thinking of the man as a friend, if a very tentative one. Raising the hand that held his sword he waved at the youths surrounding the town, and started to pick up his pace. Speaking over his shoulder he says,

"Come on you know me, I don't go looking for a fight, but if this man wants to give me one he's gonna get one hell of a surprise, I will save as many of these people as I can no matter the cost. And then I'm going to hunt down the one responsible for this, and make them pay for the crimes they've committed."

With that he started running towards the village as a single thought went through his mind, 'Whatever or whoever you are, being that gave me the vision of the one responsible for my family's murder, and the one responsible for this tug I feel in my mind. I'm not much for religion, but if you could help me save these people please do.'

Shrugging aside stray thoughts he arrived at the youths and spoke immediately,

"No time for idle chatter, take me and my friends here to the one responsible for leading this town, we're here to help you and my advice right now would be get every person that can use a weapon gathered along the perimeter."

As Ramus reached out with his mind, so too did another kind reach out in return.
| I will do what I can | I am but freshly awakened, and weak as of yet | But these folk shall not die in vain | Keep torches lit and posted | Do not lose contact with each other | Above all, do not lose hope | Otherwise all is lost |

((Sorry for the delay, exam week and school's end keeping me busy.))

Chaos

Wendell Madryt

Wendell doesn't waste time. The mage and the others are distracted, marching towards the melee. Despite his earlier surrender, he feels it might not be the best of ideas to be captured by these people. The sounds of fighting are loud and frightening to him, the clash of weapons, the screams, the curses and heavy steps and falls on the ground. He reaches forward with his arms and begins crawling away.

[4] He doesn't get far. There's an eagle's cry and the mage spins away at once, his features twisting into a sneer. In the corner of his eye, Wendells sees him raise his hands - he sees a flicker of color around them for a moment - and then Wendell's forward movement comes to an abrupt stop. He can't see anything, but feels invisible rope bind tight around him. The mage turns, satisfied, preparing another spell as he marches towards the melee.

Wendell struggles, his arms locked at his sides, his face against the soil, his weapons on his back. Even the slightest attempt at movement results in little else than pain coursing through his body. After a few moments that seem to stretch for eternity, he gives up. A burning want to be free fills his mind.

[1] He notes the start of a headache, and then his entire body goes cold at once, his heartbeat exploding. Pain, ice-cold and piercing, explodes in the back of his head. Wendell lets out a scream of surprise, but is kept down despite his fervent wishes to swing his arms at imagined attackers. For a moment, he sees fragments of a pattern he can and can not visualize in his mind, but it is quickly gone.

The battle seems to be dying down in the background and Wendell doubts the hunters are winning. Panicking, he gathers his strength, [5] but the magical binds don't budge. He feels them give in, ever so slightly - perhaps he could weaken them enough to break through by wearing them down - if he has the time.

Anathema

Focusing himself as he knows he has done countless times during the centuries - an image of a blind man staring down at him fills his vision for a moment, a forgotten teacher - Anathema picks the gauntlet up once more. He draws forth his magic.

[9] It takes him time, but the device gives up its secrets. The first thing Anathema realizes is that the gauntlet is old, older than the last age. Magic of a style he has never seen fills it, patterns that seem to flow out from the falcon like a fountain. It could be used by a non-mage as well, though Anathema feels they would lack the same precision.

The half-gauntlet's purpose seems to be allowing the user to control birds of all kinds. He cannot say the level of control, but the magic in the gauntlet would allow anyone to draw in and command birds from hummingbirds to the vast magically-engineered tsame eagles of his time.

Something about the workings of the device bother Anathema. He doubts he could replicate the magic used here, not because of complexity, but the complete strangeness of the patterns. The equivalent control spells he used to know were not even very difficult, but still... he wonders who built it. It might still be able to do things or function in a way he's not aware of.

Night is falling outside, the rubble-strewn streets melting into shadow. Anathema figures these ruins seem stable enough to sleep in for the night, if he doesn't want to venture out into the jungle. The city seems to be mostly devoid of animals and definitely of humans.

Ramus Thirdfallen barks dire orders to the youths guarding the village, who predictably panic, fumbling with their badly weighted spears and oversized armor.

"...ahabuahubaa...I'm Captain Pelham! Captain of the...uh guard..." One of them says, in a quavery voice. He's about 18, but his shoulder tabard indicates he has a rank higher than those around him. He at least didn't completely drop his spear like the others. "...uh, there's not uh...many people who can fight here...we're mostly traders and...boatscrafters. Not warriors! We only decided I could be Captain because I could belch the loudest..." He declares mournfully.

"But, uh, you need to speak to the mayor! Mayor Pelham. My father, the mayor. Let me take you to him!"

He points to the smallest boy of the 'guard' "You! You're in charge till I get back! Sound the warning bells!"

...

The young Captain leads you through the finely paved cobble street, where people are poking their heads at the commotion. At the end, the largest house in this small town-a humble two story brick building. The mayor is, in fact, eating lunch at this moment and he raises an eyebrow at you-then his panicking son.

"...ah, you were the group we hired, right? To clean up our fish problem...so, what's...all this commotion about, then?" He asks hesitantly.

----
Rankar takes the axe. He can't help but realize-with mixed excitement and dread-that his previous memories have begun to grow hazy of the event. The Old man seems to be pleased by your choice, and Rankar cannot help but think what would have happened if hadn't taken the weapon in hand

He turns to help fight the ever growing horde of bandits...not more than a few will be surprised to see him, as if something, somewhere is vitally wrong in the universe. But, what's wrong and right are up to debate for philosophers.

Rankar had decided to help his village, Wisdom, mantra and reflection be damnned.

....

...and...

time....

.......unravels....

...

When he comes too, he is lying on the ground back where he started. He stands up with a grunt, looking around. The vines former locomotion seems to have mostly stilled...as if they are now sated. He looks back upon the stone, but it has now crumbled into a fine silver dust much like the other one.

The remaining two stones now have have places for him put his hand. He has taken his share of magic here, and whatever resides here helps him no longer. The pit in the center remains as quiet and mysterious as ever...questions of fate and time flit into his mind, but already the former life is fading. He will remember it in dreams, but not in waking life.

Rankar feels a hand on his shoulder, and turns-not with fear.

For who else would be able to sneak up behind him but Caellach, his young friend?

That night, they saved many lives...though the village was still lost, timbers could be reset-fields could be replanted. The people of the town would live to do so, in time. And one young man who would also have otherwise died, survived instead. They both had lost their home, their families, their futures-yet wanders, they became (for some things cannot be unwritten)-as much to see the world, as to escape the pain of that night. Their trials had forged bonds of steel and fire. Caellachs easy smile and temper has brought comfort and companionship to Rankar even as the road was long and brutal-Rankars patience and stoic nature helping him to keep his way in the world. He has shared your pain, and faced down the slavers and beasts with you, and everything else fate has put in your path-honing his skills alongside yours, as the years passed.

He smiles now, seemingly amused at your somewhat startled expression. Though you don't know why it is almost as if you are looking upon a stranger.

"Ah, my horned friend, if you're done playing with the magic stones...? You've been standing there about a half hour-like you were sleeping standing up-but, I didn't see anything happen to you...frankly, I'm a bit relieved. Magic, right? More trouble than it's worth. Hope you had good dreams, anyway.

We should probably get a move on. I still want to see that crown of yours, the one you dreamed about, yeah? Fate waits for no man, and all that."

His voices echoes as is Rankar has never heard its like before.

Caellach is now a man reaching his prime-his small blade still adorns his side, but he has a larger and heavier blade of your design now hanging on his roughspun leather belt. Upon his well mucled right shoulder, a bright blue runic tattoo of angled horns pointing angrily to the sky-the mark of a non-Kasar that is considered a clanmate, an extraordinarily rare honor. He has earned it, though. You will oftentimes remark his blade skill surpasses your own, a humble decree, and maybe in a few years in may be true. He is still young, and reckless-but possesses an amazing well of fortitude and courage. His eyes are still the same the bright shade of green they always were, but his hair has deepened to a dark blonde, and grown thick and well kempt with years on the trail.

Though Rankar is happy and clasps his friends shoulder in the way a brother might-later he will remark in his journal how odd this feels...he can't help but get the feeling...as it was not meant to happen this way. But, how could that be? He will eventually dismiss these thoughts as dream fancy, but they will never entirely leave him. Nor will a feeling of having narrowly avoided something, lingering just on the edge of his perception. The feeling of being...hunted. Hounded. One day, he will know the truth.

But...for now-he will, in waking life, remember nothing exactly of what happened-but, that he entered the clearing-took the stone in his hand, and saw the vision of his past-of the choices he made. The right choice.

"Master Rankar, are you all right? We can stop for a bit and rest...but let's get out of this blasted place, first. It's making my skin apt to crawl away and hide." Caellach remarks, hand resting lightly on his sword hilt. He breathes deeply of the mountain air, momentarily turning to look at the sky.

...

There is one final whisper, from the stone circle and the darkness underneath. Caellach does not seem to hear it.

The past doesn't want to change. It it obdurate like a turtle's shell is obdurate: because the living flesh inside is tender and defenseless.

And finally, a stillness falls-the path forward, clear.

Yet in this calmness, Rankar now finds he is not utterly alone, and it is a comfort.

----
Solbryn calls down to the Kasar.

[3]

He reacts quickly, dropping into a guard stance and spreading his legs.

A few seconds pass, as the insects chirp and two individuals of wildly differing circumstance face one another down.

Finally, he seems to relax-though, Solbryn notices the Kasar has never appeared to have been entirely relaxed. Even before she spoke down to him.

A low pitched, rumbling voices issues forth. Solbryn thinks it's not unlike the sleepy mutter of a far off peal of thunder (an oddly poetic thought for her, she reflects), and it has an oddly musical quality to it.

"...Iooaef aeuay ili'g ki'lalj gv foyuay?" The beastmans questions, motioning in Solbryns general direction, and then downward in a swift chop.

OOC: Yay! Also, totally ripped a quote from my favorite SK novel here. It was very appropos :P

A presence again inturdes upon Ramus' mind. It seems more urgent than before.

| Tread carefully, Ramus | You will face great trials ahead but nothing is assured | There is something in this place | A minor power | Act with wisdom and be wary or it will be your undoing | There is naught you can achieve here with arm and steel but the doom of you and all with you |

Solbryn feels a general emotion fill her mind, and she senses that it comes from the Kasar. It is inquisitive and wary, but not hostile - yet.

"We are indeed the help you sent for, and that 'commotion' is in regards to the rather large amount of creatures that are coming to destroy this town right now. While we were on our way here our boat got attacked, and not by Icthys either, whatever attacked us we've never seen before and there is a lot of it, I think that is a fairly good reason for the commotion. Of course we're going to help you, but we'll need your cooperation."

Ramus says, readjusting his grip on his sheath as he waits for the man's reply.
