Hmm, just a thought. What about amputations in case of infected wounds in bodyparts?

(Would suck to have an infected wound in your head though...)

I like that idea. Could give dwarves unhappy thoughts too.

Well, sucks to be that guy. Magic could heal it, but we don't have it yet.

Either leave the useless arm (hide it behind your back or inside your coat like Kaiser Wilhelm/Napoleon) or amputate it and replace it with some kind of mechanical monstrosity.

Urist McStrangeMood has made Lebowitz, an artifact diamond eye.

Urist McOneEye has claimed Lebowitz

Urist McOneEye slams the goblin snatcher in the head with his eye
The severed part flies off in an arc!

Now is time to think of custom-fit, There is no need to craft a glass-eye unless there is a dwarf with a missing eye.

Te McDoctor has measured McOneEye up for a new glass-eye. McGemCutter is now construing a Glass-eye by direction from McDoctor for McOneEye.

This subroutine can also be made for clothing.

I think that if a boot can fit every dwarf in the fort, then a glass eye/ prosthetic limb should fit every dwarf in the fort.

I agree. Another thought: Limb prostethics act similiar to armor. Dwarves can use them to block incoming attacks without hurting themselves. Of course, the limb would be damagede instead.

The moment artificial limbs become a better option then regulair ones, we'll be chopping our dwarves to bits; a dwarf losing their arm shouldn't be a desireable thing. Sure, people will force it to happen anyway(adventurer dentists, anyone?) but it'll be for more asthetic reasons.

The only problem I see is that if someone has two prosthetic hands, they wouldn't be able to do much... just like real life...

It involves magic but, two words: Belwar Dissengulp.

I'd like to see prosthetic hands that restored very basic functionality.
Let Urist McStumpy Clean Self, and Store Owned Item, once more!

That, or assign helper monkeys dwarves to aid them in basic self care tasks.

You know what? Cancel that strikethrough. Helper monkeys it is!

I just don't like how crutches are the only option to handle amputations. Even if you ignore the arm issue, there other ways to deal with leg loss. I've heard of double leg amputees using what are basically skateboards to get around, how about that? I think a dwarf can manage to nail some wheels to the underside of a wooden board.

As for hands, I don't like hooks either. A hook is a poor manipulator and a poor weapon, and I like to think even dwarves aren't stupid enough to attach a sharp metal hook to a creature prone to random fits of domestic violence. I could be wrong on that, though.
It's been brought up already, but Götz of the Iron Hand's prosthetic seems completely doable with DF's tech level. From the pictures I've seen, it was just a poseable hand, no fancy mechanisms or anything special. Just metal for the hand and leather for the straps, nothing a dwarf doesn't deal with regularly. Articulate enough to hold a weapon or tool, but not enough to match a real hand in their use.

Replacing a limb wouldn't be a perfect fix no matter how well made the replacement is, even today's prosthetics can't beat the real thing. Wrestlers would have difficulty maintaining a grip with a hand that had no muscles, craftsmen would lack the dexterity for finer works, and movement in general would be awkward with any kind or replacement leg. But it is still better than nothing.
There are slight, SLIGHT benefits to an artificial limb. A prosthetic isn't connected to the bloodstream or nervous system, meaning no bleeding and no pain if it gets severed. It would still be destroyed by a severing strike, though, and you'd need to build another. No, an artificial limb should not increase chance to block, but an adamantine arm should be able to deflect the strike of a copper sword.
Also, a dwarf with two replacement legs should be able to walk right through a puddle of syndrome-inducing substance without consequence for the same reason.
However, the disadvantages should outweigh any benefits, while still remaining better than crutches or nothing at all.

PowerGoal45, MEET THE CYBERFIST, (Future): You use your iron geared prosthetic hand to crush a piece of stone in front of the cowering goblin, and it passes out.

Strangely enough, prosthetic are already planned.

I suspected they might be, but I confess that I did but a cursory scan of that wall of text that you linked us to before I posted my comment, and couldn't find them listed. Could you kindly point us to the arc and the number associated with this planned feature? Thanks in advance!
