Making artificial limbs
« on: May 05, 2013, 01:25:25 pm »

Even in the medieval ages it was possible for people to have some sort of limb replacement if they lost certain limbs in battle.

Suggestion:
Being able to make "hooks", "iron hands" "peglegs" and "eye patches".

Effect:
A dwarf is less affected by limbloss and gets a minor happy thought.

Also, would be cool to see:
"Urist McHook rips out the throat of the blind cave ogre through the use of his *Iron hook* on his left arm."

I like this idea, I've been brewing on something similair (Metal/bone teeth) after reading something aboutd dwarves all becoming toothless freaks if they're ever going to get into fistfights for fun. Why not add fake glass/gem eyes as well?

An Urist with a metal hook, a ruby glass eye and steel teeth. Now that would be something.

Let's see:

Peg legs can be either made through a carpenters shop, or forged in a metalworkers forge.

A gem eye must be made at a gemsetter? Though I guess a stone/wood one could be made at a craftdwarfs workshop.

Eye patch is made of cloth and made at craftdwarfs workshop. For the sake of good fun, let's say one can sew images onto them.

Prostethic arm can be made at a carpenters workshop if it is made of wood while hooks can be made of metal at a metalworkers forge. Though the ability to grasp is impaired, at least the dwarf can still do some more damage.

"Urist was pleased by the new hook lately."

I'm guessing a gemcutter would be more appropriate for the job. Perhaps you need a doctor to put the fake eyes and teeth in?

Leather would also work, I suppose.

It sounds like a plan. Although it should have its limits: no one should be walking around with a bismuth bronze spine and adamantine skin, unless he wanted to that is.  8)

The only problem I see is that if someone has two prosthetic hands, they wouldn't be able to do much... just like real life...

I think that's far over the tech limit. Replacement bones are pretty advanced healthcare.

Well, a dwarf with two stone eyes won't be able to see much, either. It's more about looking like a normal dwarf then functioning like one.(Though, I suppose fake teeth would be usable for biting, should the need arise.)

Imagine a dwarf with every possible mutilation getting prostethics.  :p

Also, maybe for more advanced prostethics, a mechanic would have to put some things togetether.
On that note, a dwarven robocop comes to mind. :p

Götz von Berlichingen.
He was a german mercenary from the 14/1500's. He had an iron prosthetic hand that was good enough to hold a sword and fight effectively with it.

This should be in dwarf fortress.

Theres not much point in amputations if you could fix them. I've got nothing against prosthetics, but I don't think they should be near as effective as the real thing.

I dont think you can have wooden fake eyes, I dont want dwarves getting splinters in their eye sockets.

Reasonable prosthetics seem very un-dorfy to me.  I think it more fitting that a mechanic makes a grafted weapon from a weapon and a mechanism (with mechanism quality determining effective skill level for skills involving the weapon), and then surgery, suturing, and wound dressing are required to attach it without killing or further crippling the receiver.  Anyone who doesn't use a weapon or weapon-like tool to do their work is SOL.  But hey, unlucky cave-in and highly skilled mechanic might make for a fast miner upgrade.

This sounds like a exceptional idea.
But one thing is missing what about glass eyes? I thought fake eyes were usually made out of that, not gems.
Though gem eyes are still good.
Also for the arm with hook, maybe it could work as though first at carpenter shop you make <incomplete oak arm> and then
at a metal smith you could make <Iron hook>, and finally at a crafts dwarf shop you would make a <Fake arm>?

Seems like a complicated supply chain for little reason at all. After all, it's not like other metal tools which should have wooden handles need this.
