On games though, let's not forget the entire game of Majora's Mask.

I swear... the LW had some fucked up hallucinations... telling him to just stay there... I swear, I half expected Amata to run up to me and curse me out for leaving(As I hadn't known of Trouble on the Homefront at the time) the vault. Though... just seeing survivors of the vault left as insane psychos, their final days spent hitting a power armored(Outcast ) soldier, burning them to death... God that place left me with that feeling in my head like I ended their suffering... getting hallucinations all the time... instead of just fueling my greed for Pre-war tech to sell

Anyways, how has no one mentioned the classic example of vidya game scariness, STALKER.
That game can make you creeped out just by walking across a field, then when you get to... well, pretty much any plot notable place.

Pripyat, the Monolith base, the labs, the bloodsucker nest... The list goes on and on...

That reminds me of my sole playthrough of STALKER. I could not make the flashlight worked so I had to do the whole game without it. This + creepy monsters make the playthrough something quite memorable.

Dark Souls, in The Painted World...

It's a painting that you enter, which is full of the usual flair of undead and whatnot.  However, the only way to leave is to jump off the ledge behind the boss, at which point you exit the painting.  Because that's the only exit, the devs made the boss optional - it'd suck to get literally stuck because you can't beat the boss.

The boss is a halfbreed, the only dragon halfbreed alive.  In the dawn of the world, immortal dragons ruled over a land where nothing ever really changed, and they liked it, until humans discovered fire (life), and dragons were ultimately sold out by Seath the Scaleless - a perpetually bleeding dragon who is albino, has no scales, and went insane as he searched for immortality (most dragons are immortal, but he's not).  The halfbreed boss is his daughter, and the mother is somewhat debatable, but most likely the goddess of sin and justice, a lesser known deity because she was overshadowed by 'royal' deities.

The halfbreed drops a very powerful weapon if you cut off her tail (she appears as a 9 foot tall albino woman with a tail), but her fight is optional.  You can just as easily walk past her or talk to her.  Despite the powerful weapon drop and usual boss rewards, I could never bring myself to fight an enemy who starts a fight by going invisible and saying, "Why don't you just leave me alone?"  Added to that, the painted world is her refuge, created for her as the only halfbreed with no place on earth, so she was given a home that wasn't on earth.  A home that happens to be full of horrific undead, with blob-like bodies, explosive toxin sores and ulcers, and an undead dragon - in the realm of a dragon halfbreed.

The thing that always gets me is the community.  The only mention of her is how to burst in, cut off her tail, kill her, and harvest her soul to make a weapon.

I butchered her starting with lopping off her tail.  I didn't even want the weapon, but she deserved as slow and painful a death as possible for making me go through that living hell.

Dark souls kinda makes me into an asshole.

I remember a more upbeat easter egg, if you would beat up the TV in the building where there was a band and a shopkeeper, the guy would say "doesn't make the signal better" or something like that.
