I have a nest box for them, but the female won't claim it. The nest box is in the same pasture and the bird is not chained.

In short yes.
In my experience they'll only lay eggs once a year (in the spring), and it'll only show the nestbox as claimed during that period. Make sure you don't have any stockpiles that accept the eggs or the dwarves will steal them before you can hatch a cat replacement.

Also, check that the nestbox isn't claimed by something else and that falcon eggs are disabled in the Kitchen screen. An egg in a nestbox is just as valid an ingredient as an egg in a stockpile.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
