Author Topic: Why Do I Get Murky Pools When I Search Embarks and See a Stream?  (Read 527 times)

I'm playing Masterwork, but using the traditional worldgen. I'm searching for spots without aquifers because the one time I played one it coated the whole map in water and made it totally unusable...

About 80% of the time, I see what looks like a nice river/stream running through the map, but when I get there it is actually just murky pools dotted throughout the map.

I'm thinking the only way to fix this is to learn how to use the advanced worldgen setting, so tips on that will be appreciated.

Your embark footprint has to actually include the stream if you want access to it.

Oh... I was thinking after narrowing the map down three times, where I place my nice little 3x3 or 4x4 is where i land within the local map. Silly me. I thought I want to embark near the water but not land in it, so I just put my square nearby.

I watched some videos where people could hit F1/F2/F3 to see the various biomes in one spot. I think I can do this at some point too, but after doing a search I can't. Why is that?

Is there a way to keep replaying a world or a specific spot I like?

I know it is viewed as cheating, but I don't get how I can save and restart games too. I'm sick of redoing the basic stuff over and over. I'd rather just go back a little and fix some mistakes where I am at.

F1/F2/F3 is only active when you're overlapping a boundary between two biome areas. Look for different terrain symbols and place an embark across at least two of them. This gives you more variety of plants and animals.

If you want to save-scum, just crash out of the program rather than Abandon Fortress. Then, restart the program and load the save like normal.

Turn on Embark Autosave and Seasonal Autosave in your df_init.txt file, then, you'll get backup saves from every 3 months including first founding of your fortress. You can also create new forts / Reclaim forts in the same world if you Abandon a previous fortress.

Backing up save folders lets you replay a whole world / embark, or you can get the random seed from one world, and use it to gen an exact copy.

The 3x3 or 4x4 IS the local map.

3x3 and 4x4 is your local map, but it is also all of your local map. You have to include stream in it. When you place it near the water, the stream is just outside your map.

You can do it after search just as well, your 4x4 square has to include several biomes in it.
