What kind of dish costs 5'000$ ? did you eat gold? especially since other prices are probably sort of reasonable, in the context.

Those are wines.

EDIT: And they're still over 10x what is reasonable

No, I think those prices check out. I know at least that Pétrus can be that expensive. What bugs me is that the receipt is on the exact same paper you get at mcdonalds.  ???

Wow, 7328.20$ gratuity.

Makes you wonder why you have all these doctors and lawyers running around, if they were smart they'd be going where the real money is. feeding rich people in Southhampton.

How in the unholy hell did this come about? That total rivals all the money I've made working over my entire life!

That's...That's wrong on so many level.
mare monti spaghetti at 39 dollars? What the hell America, what the hell.
This is like Fusion or Nouvelle cuisine. You want 'Italian'? Go and grab a pizza for five dollar for heaven's sake!
Hell, you want to eat pasta? Just grab flour and eggs and get to it. There really isn't much of a thought process involved, and if somebody claims 'pasta made the Italian way' then he's probably yanking your chain.

This isn't decadence...
This is the human's stupidity to go in those places.

“Well,” he said. “We’re in the Forgotten hunting grounds I take it. Your screams just woke them up early. Congratulations, Lyara.”
“Do something!” she whispered, trying to keep her sight on all of them at once.
Basileus clapped his hands once. The Forgotten took a step forward, attracted by the sound.
“There, I did something. I clapped. I like clapping,” he said. -The Investigator And The Case Of The Missing Brain.

My thoughts exactly. Even according to their website you're not paying for the food, you're paying to be seen with other people who can afford their exorbitant prices.

Well, the food is expensive, but for a good restaurant I can understand it. The wines blew it up. Seriously, they're like 95% of the price. Why on Earth would you drink 7000$ worth of wine in one sitting? Even if you can tell the difference between a 120$ bottle and a 5000$ bottle, there is no way you can after having quaffed a whole bottle already. This is a waste.

I've been reading up on this because it seemed unbelievable, and from what I've read it sounds like it's a fake. It was "leaked" by the restaurant and claimed to be from a particular millionaire, who then threatened legal action because it was untrue. Very likely it was a publicity stunt.

That said, that restaurant is apparently very scammy and prone to offering specials without disclosing the price so that you only find out once the bill comes that it was a $250 plate of pasta. Also: $15 glasses of water?

Nobody can tell the difference. They pay the price exactly because it's expensive, not because the wine is particularly good. People make friends with others in their socioeconomic background, rich people included. The best way to meet other rich people is to go to where they hang out and prove that you are rich by lots of frivolous conspicuous consumption by crap with absurd price tags. That's how people get invited to the yacht clubs/ Illuminati meetings. They consume sanely priced things when they are not showing off.

You know, I think a fun thing to have as a yard decoration when I have a house would be a giant bronze bust of some Soviet leader or other pilfered from the Eastern Bloc. Imagine...I could intimidate visitors by flanking my driveway with twin giant heads of Lenin.
