Author Topic: What am I missing here? Trying to create an artifact vault.  (Read 745 times)

So I built a room, laid out my stockpiles, told them to allow furniture, finished good, weapons, and armor, and then under each category changed 'core' and 'total' quality to artifact.  I changed nothing else.  And nothing happened, even after new artifacts were made.

So I told all other stockpiles to not accept things of an artifactual quality.  And nothing happened, even after new artifacts were made.

So I told the pile to take from every other stockpile I have.  And nothing happened, even after new artifacts were made.

So now I'm at a loss.  What am I missing?  Will dwarves just not move artifacts?  They can build artifact statues and beds, I know that, but maybe they can't transport the smaller stuff for...whatever reason.

I still don't think I'm crazy enough to play this game properly.

I only build vaults for my artefact 'finished goods', because those tend to be utterly useless and this way they're at least less likely to get stolen.

Dwarfs _will_ move artefacts, if the artefacts are currently not in appropriate stockpiles and your target pile can accept them. You must be missing something, but i can't say what it is. I assume the various materials are all allowed.

One thing i've noticed was that the trade depot can turn into a black hole for mixed-contents bins if you re-sort your stockpiles: bins that were in the depot during the reorganisation and contain items that should go into different stockpiles now will be stuck in the depot forever and the dwarfs won't remove the items from them to bring them to the appropriate stockpiles, either. Some of your artefacts might have gotten stuck in the depot like this, but of course it shouldn't hold for new ones.

To learn more, check your stock listings, look up the artefacts in the extended view and 'z'oom to their location. This way, you can find out where they ended up, and that should help quite a bit in determining what the problem actually is. If they're never moved out of the workshops and are actually stockpile-acceptable items (i.e. not large gems), something's wrong with the designated artefact stockpile - no access, not enough haulers, wrong settings.

If you set a bin with an artifact in it for trade, the dwarves will carefully shake the artifact out before taking the (possibly empty) bin to the depot. You can't get an artifact into the trade depot until you abandon the site and reclaim.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

changed 'core' and 'total' quality to artifact
I always set artifact stockpile to accept artifact total quality/any core quality. Don't know why that should make any difference (logically it shouldn't), but  my artifact stockpiles work for me.

As it was said, there's no way artifacts can get into trade depot, but this bin thing actually annoys me like hell. I've got bins all over, even deconstructing the depot didn't help.

Sorry for double posting, I expected the posts to merge automatically for some reason.

Dump the artifacts into a dump zone, then unforbid them once dumped. Your dwarfs should move the artifacts to the appropriate stockpile. If not, you have other stockpiles set to allow artifacts.

You may also wish to disable bins in your artifact stockpile for appearance reasons and so it doesn't soak up tons of bins.

Setting the artifact stockpile to "take from" the other stockpiles may work too. Dumping will definitely work. Dump the individual artifacts, not the bin they are in.

I used these methods to set up an artifact vault myself.

Er, it's not possible to mark artifacts for dumping.

...which makes me wonder exactly how you managed to use that method...

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
