Unbuildable square
« on: May 01, 2013, 08:27:23 am »

I have a square on my map in which my dwarfs refuse to build. I get the "creature occupying square" message even though there is nothing occupying the square.  This has been repeated ~100 times now.  Things are now arranged such that it is impossible for anyone to walk through that square.  If I build a door there, it is permanently open.  I have tried all the tricks I can think of.  Any thoughts?

Did any of those tricks involve magma?

Cave-ins?

Flood it with magma, drop water on the magma to obsidianise it (obliterating anything on it) and then mine it out. Should do the trick.

Or use DFHack to drop an obsidian tile, saves you a lot of time and effort.

The tile probably has bad occupancy flags - the game thinks there's a unit there, but there isn't. Have you been using any tools to forcibly move creatures around?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I had this problem when building a wall. For some reason, my dwarves would stand right on top of the square when they tried to build on it, which would give that error message. Cancelling the build order and reissuing seemed to fix it though.

Not that I know of - I have DFHack, but I don't think I've done anything movement related.

I had the same thing when building my little tower, just 1 wall space remained unbuilt and the wall builder insisted on standing in the spot where he was trying to build the wall...idiot.

I demolished a wall or two and got him to build the wall in the difficult spot first...and that fixed it.

Do you just keep un-suspending construction there and it gets re-suspending due to a creature blocking the site?  IF so, try canceling that building completely, then ordering it built again.  That usually fixes it.

Had exactly the same problem last night. Unsuspending sometimes works but the only sure way is to cancel the wall and reorder it. I hope that is listed as a bug...

Having this problem regularly too, and I never used to.  I just recently started a new fort with Masterwork 3.0 - this might be a mod issue?  Are you guys using MWDF too?

Well, I can't speak for anyone else but I've had the once-a-wall-is-cancelled-it's-unbuildable issue, where I have to cancel it completely and re-designate, or else the Dorfs will keep saying they can't buuuiiiiild it *whine whine*. And I have no mods, not even DFHack (large gasp from the audience).
