The Raiders weapon kits can be made of stone too, or clay...  2 lumps of clay put together by a stonecrafter makes one stone club in the tribal wargear shop. 5 clubs and you have a raiding kit.

I have been toying around with the initial save and you can usually get the metalworking system up and running by the end of summer. Thou the first migration wave has been odd, each time I had a member of Impedocles previous fort turn up. The first one went beserk, killed one of the original seven and started a tantrum spiral... The next one at least only went melancholy.

Oh wow, you are right about the clay weapons.  I assumed they wouldn't work because the raws specified metal weapons.  That makes sending out raiding parties much easier.

And yeah, I lost my last fort in this world to a tantrum spiral, so we may get some pissed off immigrants.  On the other hand, most of the elite military orcs were still happy at the end, since they had no time for friends and apparently enjoyed slaughtering berserk civilians.  They will be useful if they show up.

*Edit: The clay weapons don't seem to get stored in stockpiles, which is strange.

Year 124

Spring
We have reached the sea: The Blood Sea, according to our new Ronin friend.  It will run red with elf blood before I am done. There is a cave nearby where we can shelter from the rain and the giant beasts which roam the area.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Deep Blue asks me to make him a wooden axe so that he can harvest wood.  I don't see how he can possibly chop down trees with his scrawny arms, much less with a wooden axe.  But apparently he can talk the forest spirits into giving us wood, or something.

Everyone gets to work, and before long we have a living space inside the cave and some weapons for Navatar and Deep Blue to hunt with.  Navatar is as good with that bow as she claimed.  Together they take down some enormous beasts.

All of the black rocks we acquired don't seem very useful to me, but Navatar demonstrates that we can burn them to make something like charcoal.  I will call it rockcoal.  He uses this rock-coal to turn some of the other rocks into shiny, if not very useful, metal bars.  Deep Blue claims these, saying that he will offer them to the spirits in exchange for their blessings.

Deep Blue claims the top of the cave spire and builds a stone circle to make his offerings at, and begins his rites. I don't see much to show for it.  He claims to have learned the secrets of a fairyfire spell, but I despite ordering him to learn it a few times, I haven't actually seen him cast it.

A serpentman climbs our of the depths of the caverns and our bone carver narrowly escapes harm.  Navatar demonstrates that she doesn't need arrows or even weapons to take care of our enemies.  She scares me

Summer
Four orcs arrive and join our clan, and I have Navatar train one as an archer. I am happy to see that one is an Uruk, a strong warrior named Omega.  Knowing how much Deep Blue likes to put himself in danger, I assign Omega to guard him.  Deep Blue conjures a crystal glass spear to arm him with, which he quickly puts to deadly use when a group of raptors attacks our camp.

Another immigrant is a corsair, who tells us of the freelancers: deadly orcish pirates who prey on the weak races who ply The Blood Sea.  After hearing of the riches that are near for the taking and seeing merchant ships sailing near the shore, I help him build a guild for the freelancers and some long-boats to raid them ourselves.

The first longboat comes back empty-handed, but the second overtakes a merchant vessel and returns laden with booty.  They returned with gold, silver, some strange human weapons, and a goblin slave.  They even captured blueprints for a bazaar, so that we can begin trading our coins for valuable metals goods.  But best of all, they captured an elvish slave!  I will make that elf regret ever being born.  We retire to celebrate with feasting and a game of beat-the-elf, but I am interrupted by bad news.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some goblins come to trade, and I ransom the goblin captive for almost everything they brought.  So it was not all a waste.

And that ends the first half of our year at Burstscourge.

Nice update, sorry about the raccoon foiling your plans though :)
Were you able to trade for an anvil?  I don't remember if goblins trade them.

It sounds like you have your Druid doing rituals so you're probably making candles, are they still working nicely and stockpiling in the new "illuminations" category? (this is a Masterwork v3 game right, where the illuminations stockpile exists?)

If you still have the Fairyfire mojo then probably the reaction was cancelled for some reason.  Now that we have a new Autosyndrome plug in integrated the spell learning should have 100% chance of success and he learns it permanently, but it will use up the spell scroll.  If you confirm any behavior different than please let me know.  He should flash with a "totem" symbol for a couple weeks to verify that he learned it.

I started this the day before masterwork v3 was released, so it is still v2.9i.  The candles are just staying in the workshop.  I think he used up the fairfyfire mojo after the last time I queued it, so he should have the spell now.  He flashed for awhile, so I guess I just haven't given him a chance to cast it yet.  I'll try sending him hunting.

The goblins didn't bring an anvil, but the orc caravan should be coming along soon.  I actually have enough bones to make an ironbone anvil at the smelter, but I'd rather just wait and trade for it at the end of autumn.  I'm really doing fine without metalworking.

Being able to ransom is pretty cool, didn't notice that before.  (I'm just following for now)

A side note, the value of captives when "ransomed" to the caravan is rebalanced in the future, because it had never occured to me either ;)

Goblins & Kobolds will be worth less than now (which was a lot); Humans etc. will be worth more than now (which was a little).  When your Corsairs get skilled I think they will capture higher quality prisoners; and you can always ransom the Humans at the shadowbroker for coins.

I think that choosing between being able to buy stuff with the ransom at the trader, but giving up the opportunity to have a goblin stonecutter shanty or whatever, is a pretty cool mechanic , so I am glad you taught me this trick :)  But 8000 dorfbucks is a bit much for a modest quality goblin.

I agree that it is a little much, given that you can round up goblins with little cost.  I couldn't make good use of the goblin without much metal or cloth, and selling it let me buy a ton of useful stuff from the goblins.

Sorry for taking so long.  I've been very busy lately, and though I've finished my year I haven't had time to do a good write up.  I don't want to hold up the succession any more (and I want to see what happens), so I am going to post the save.  I'll leave a quick summary as a placeholder, and come back with pictures and a full write up in a few days.

Year 124 - part two
  • Further attempts to raid merchants have been unsuccessful.
  • Immigrants arrived with Pan, a corsair who has taken over raiding duties.
  • Taiga Orc caravan came and I traded bloodsteel weapons for an anvil and other supplies including tons of leather.  I don't recall what I ordered for next year
  • Fortified the cavern and it's hill to act as a safe haven  Most of the workshops and stockpiles are still out in the open.
  • I built a pump to purify water into a well so they would stop complaining about the dirty water.
  • Military now consists of 4 archers and 2 poorly equipped spear orcs
  • Slaughtered large amounts of wildlife.
  • Drow caravan arrived at end of winter.  I decided that they were too elfy for my tastes and therefore must die.  I began this plan, but the year ended and I am handing the reins over to my war chief

I'll take a turn as overseer...chieftain...clanfather...whatever the hell orcs call their leader. Seems like fun!
