disposal of caged undead?
« on: April 30, 2013, 10:18:16 am »

I got all ready to use the mass pitting method described on the wiki, and then found that you can't assign zombies or necromancers to a (p)it like you can assign goblins or wild animals.  Is there any solution, other than (b)uilding each cage and linking them all up to levers, if I want to dump my undead captives into a target-practice area?  Is atom-smashing or magma the only way I can dispose of the living dead?

hmm, I didn't know assigning to pit didn't work.  If you can't assign them to a pit then you may not even be able to assign them to another cage.  If you could at least do that, then you could put them all in one cage and use mechanisms.

Sounds like dodge traps are the way to go.

magma, at least, is one way you -can't- dispose of the living dead, except perhaps when they're still in the cage. Zombies have a distressing habit of surviving years and years of magma baths

Instead of mass-pitting, try building one cage and assigning everything you can to that cage.
Make sure there are some extra cage traps near it, just in case an undead goblin breaks free at the last second.

Isn't that problem only present with dwarven zombies and necromancers?

adding on to that, build some fortifications between you and the zombies, then execute them via firing squad.

One thing I find amusing is, build your zombie cages as buildings, link to a lever, seal off the area, then pull the lever and, once they're all out, either crush them with a cave-in trap, or obsidianize them, if your cages are magma safe and/or you don't mind losing the cages. (though if you don't mind losing the cages, I'd just atom-smash.) Trapping them in a 1x1 area and unloading zillions of arrows/bolts/ballista shots works too. The options you have increase if you've just got necromancers making your life difficult and not, say, evil ground constantly reanimating the corpses of everything and anything.

You can atomsmash them while they're still in their cages. It shouldn't be a problem.

I guess you can atomsmash even more creatures that way than without caging them. For example, can you atomsmash a caged FB?

Probably?  but why on earth would you want to?

That may be the case.  I think all my zombies were dwarfs or dwarf parts.
