I've seen some armor grade boiled leather IRL and that stuff is comparable to iron because at the same weight as realistic iron armor it is around 1 cm thick and does not noticeably bend under fist strike. It should degrade much faster than metal from slashing damage once Toady implements damage to armor though.

Combining small turtles to get usable armor does look somewhat unrealistic, but that was in DF from the beginning and twice as thick cover should provide better protection.

Can Kobolds milk some creatures for extract that could be usable as oil? If not - I think it would be thematically appropriate to add.

Edit: in version 4b I got a ward from the temple reaction and it was not "tame". So I ordered it to be trained* and an animal trainer succeeded in that.
*It still never reacted to possessed dwarves for me neither before taming, nor after.

I generated a world using the new settings.exe and included both dwarven and taiga orcs so I could change from one to another without regenning. Legends has 1 dwarf and 2 taiga orc civs still surviving but when I try to embark there is only the dwarf civ to choose from. Where is the option to allow me to change to the orc fortress civs?

Edit: After seeing others with the same issue in the orc questions thread, I just want to clarify that yes, I am tabbing over on embark to view the available civilizations and I've genned several worlds now with the same problem.

On the Masterwork launcher. tab #2 <Creature & Races>. 2nd column. 3rd set of options <Set Playable:>. Did you have the Taiga Orcs set to YES when you genned the world?

Yes.  Both dwarves and Taiga orcs set to Yes, cutebolds set to No.  Had these settings both for world gen and for when I tried to embark.

Also its now working as of the  6th world genned. I used identical settings for all of them so I'm not sure what the cause of the unavailable orcs was.

I have a trade storehouse, I unpack crates purchased in the trade depot without any trouble.  The dwarfs just don't seem to want to bring in this orphaned one.

Semi-solution: next time a caravan arrives - order your orphaned crate to be brought to the depot. When it is brought inside the Depot building - cancel the trading of the crate. It should at this point be indistinguishable from all other crates you get from trading.

In which workshop do I find the "soft bed". I looked at the craftsdwarves workshop and didn't find it. I am able to order one at the manager, but it never seems to be produced.

You should find it at the tanner's, and you'll need an existing wooden bed, and a bag of feathers.

i want to start a very long and bugfree fortress game. Is 4d ok for that ? Or better another version ? Rr what options should be turned off in 4d ?

4D without diseases is probably the best version from bugs and has the best of the newest features. I think the diseases needs a few more rounds of balancing and player familiarity for it to be good for a long term fort.

I have two questions.

1) I turned off diseases, but am still getting rabies victims in my game. I used a non-Masterwork world gen setting, is that possibly the cause? I see a lot of PS_EL, etc, parameters in the other world gens that came with Masterwork that I didn't copy over.

2) I built some workshops outside while I was getting the underground rooms setup. They kept disassembling though. I searched the forum and the manual, but didn't see any mention of this. I thought it might be related to the rain somehow, though I later had an underground farm disassemble as well.

Rabies is currently always on. I will adjust the GUI to toggle it as well. its because its in other creature files.

No idea about the workshops... which ones, which buildmats did you use, any fog/mist that hit them? Do they just disassemble, or dissasemble when you do certain reactions/jobs? Heat and Cold can damage them, any mages nearby, FrostGiants?
