Poll

Should Scaleplate/Chitinplate/Shellplate reduced to "Scale/Chitin/Shell", and "Rigid X-plate" to "X-plate". It would shorten names a lot.

Yes. Text gets cut off too often.
No. I dont care/like the names as they are.
Dont you have anything better to do then making such tiny adjustements?

Are masterpiece books, like, ☼books☼ or their own thing? Cause if the former, reactions can't be forced to have certain qualities except through some specific DFHack stuff.

Putnam: They are their own thing. 10% to get one when writing normal books. They give a lot of XP.

Torrasque: Its a printing press, not a copy-machine. And I want masterpiece books to be a rare commodity. But yes, the printing press was designed to mass produce books. It currently makes books in batches of 3, using less reagents then the scriptorium. All in all it should be a lot faster. You still need the scriptorium to bind books and make ink, glue and all that. The leaflets are cheaper, they just take ink and paper. I wonder if I shouldnt move "ink making" to the craftsdwarf or so... glue and paper/papyrus/vellum are also made somewhere else. And enable "ink from dye", which would allow 8 new sources of ink.

silentdeth: is noted.

The mod could use more ink and that’d be a great reaction for the crematorium.  Historically and up until about 70 years ago, the best ink was India Ink which is bone black  -- bone ash –  mixed with water.  It’s jet black and indelible.  (I’ve lost a couple of nice shirts to India Ink.)  You can’t really make ink out of any other ash and there are better uses in the game for blood.  It’s possible to make ink from dye but it’s a hassle.  In an embark without graphite, ink is a real limitation.  You’ve already added quills so, India Ink.

Is it possible to have something that breaks apart when fired from a catapult, like a grapeshot type thing. Or a special ammo/item made for minecart shotguns.

Meph, please do consider the fact that moving book related reactions somewhere else will add confusion and make the whole ordeal of making books even more of a chore.

Were you able to get it to trigger the magma workshops?

@silentdeth: Not quite, the script is interactive. When I asked in the dfhack thread they said: Oh, its easy to change that, do it yourself... while I am looking at a compiles C++ plugin which I cant even read, lol. If you can manage to rewrite the "feature" plugin into a "feature.lua" script that only reveals the magma_lake, sure, go ahead. ^^ The idea was a good one though.

@Z1000000m: All the other materials already come from somewhere else. Screwpress, Thatchery, Tanner for the paper, kitchen for glue, quills in the craftsman... basic workshops every fortress has. The line of
thought behind it is this: If people disable the library system (because they dont use it, which I know many people do) they lose access to ink. So the Printing Press and Speakers Podium are useless. The Architects Study is useless. You can equip diplomats in the expedition outfitter... all this needs ink.

@jimboo: Ink from ash was the first thing I did. I even noticed that I already have a "ink from dye" reaction... completely forgot about that.

OK, I’m nit-picking.  But you’ve gone to a lot of trouble for period accuracy: quills?
[NAME:Burn bodyparts to ash]
[NAME:Burn vermin to ash]

Wood ash can’t make ink.  Vermin ash – I suppose.   Would require a lot of vermin.
[REACTION:MAKE_INK_DYE] ; Hmm, I never noticed it.  If it ain’t in the manual . . .

My idea was to parse the output of the feature plugin looking for magma, I don't know lua, but it it should be that hard to learn. I do know C++ so I can look at that, I however do not have a dev environment to compile it. I fiddle with it some between recording another LP episode at 13 FPS I have plenty of time to sit around while the dwarf haul in all of the loot. (Anyway to turn of pathfinding for underground sieges if they have no entrance?)

EDIT: I can do it, will have to write an LUA API for the feature plugin, then a LUA script. I need to download a bunch of stuff to be able to build dfhack so it will not be until tomorrow as I am a lazy bastard, and it say I have to reboot. I hate rebooting.

Rebooting your PC? As in: Turning it temporarily off? Thats just disgusting, that poor creature...

(Anyway to turn of pathfinding for underground sieges if they have no entrance?) => Nope. I can make all of them dig into your fort though. ;)

And thanks for the offer to help. The plugin works fine, you can build magma furnaces. But you need to type "feature list" and the you get all the map features, and then you have to type "feature show #" chosen your wanted feature. And the numbers are different on every map, so I cant make a reaction for it. The reaction would always have the same command that it inputs.

EDIT: I'm trying to wrap up all the stuff I made and see if I can do an update in 1-2 days :)

I have to say, I never realized the power of the Timberyard untill today. Four large fields of Fungiwood saplings keep my yards running non-stop producing wood. Which is then carved into mugs.........dear god the production is constant to the point that I can just buy almost anything I want. Steel weapons? Not a problem. Metal bars? Piece of cake. Why oh why did i never realize the potential of this industry. Forget the dangers of mining, bring on the industrial lumber mills. Lets piss off the elves.

Edit: By armoks beard, forget mugs. Menacing spikes and then Sharpened Spikes from the trap engineer. Useful for defence and economics. And now im having to look at making another Timber yard as the two I have are no longer able to keep up with Sapling production.

You should farm Steeloak instead, or as well. Also very useful for any above ground building you might need to do early on when you also have a Sawmill. Especially now that Scrap Wood isn't yellow anymore.

Wood - > Smooth wood - > (2) Scrap wood - > (8) wood planks

That's not even at the crazy end either...

EDIT: Is there some reasoning behind having Halberd and Scythe use the Spear skill? Or for Glaives to be using the WHIP skill?

I'm not really sure what else I would use for the Scythe, but I would probably put a Pike closer to a spear than a Halberd or Glaive. At least considering a Pike is basically just a spear on steriods.
