Poll

Should Scaleplate/Chitinplate/Shellplate reduced to "Scale/Chitin/Shell", and "Rigid X-plate" to "X-plate". It would shorten names a lot.

Yes. Text gets cut off too often.
No. I dont care/like the names as they are.
Dont you have anything better to do then making such tiny adjustements?

- Could bridges be modded? I think it would be cool if drawbridges would also need ropes or chains as buildmat - just for a little bit more difficulty when walling in
Not possible

To be more general, anything in the build menu outside workshops and furnaces can't be modded

I don't mind the effort of building the libraries, like some challenge, but as it stands they just don't reward me. Maybe turn them into a college instead of a grade school. Can you force a minimum skill level to use them (maybe 4?) Then let them train to level 10 or so. Not to legendary, but enough so they take decent apprentices and turn them into something like masters.

Research seems fine to me. I like it.

If possible, I'd like the ability to freeze water inside and without the right climate being necessary. I was thinking maybe nethercap blocks/logs could be modified using some hi-tech wizardry to have a temperature below freezing point? It could permit some pretty deadly traps being built while also introducing plenty of dangers to your own dwarves, like breaching the third cavern, having a dwarf lose his feet to frostbite by walking over a 'negacap' block bridge, or all your alcohol being inaccessible due to being mistakenly stored in negacap barrels.

As for the reagents, maybe just use the combination of shadethorn and nethercap with flux? If you put something nearly freezing in the shade then it's bound to get colder hehehe.

Just throw a ice landmine into water. Done. ;)

Wait, ice landmines can freeze water?

Anything cold enough can freeze water.

...I did not know that. For clarification, you mean actual frozen blocks of ice, right?

Yep. The problem is that if you mine them, and the temperature is high enough, they will instantly melt away. Its kinda useless... Frost Giants sometimes freeze the water around them as well, they can even trap themselves that way.

That's good to know and definitely deadly, but for the sake of mass murder I feel I must still try to make a case for negacaps (name subject to change  :) ). Before the save got corrupted, I was building this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If the pic isn't clear, you make the moat a road into your base that's a few z levels down and ~3 across, then you dig a tunnel underneath it 1 tile deep and ~5 wide, run raisable drawbridges length-ways down the middle 3 tiles and connect them to levers. Fill the tunnel with magma and then the bottom z level of moat with water. Bridges up atom smashing magma = water frozen, bridges down = water melted by returning magma causing everyone on the ice to start drowning, bridges up again = drowning baddies get encased in ice instantly.

The downsides to it were that it required a constant magma flow, water source, with many magma-safe mechanisms and bridges, and that it had to be outside and uncovered (a freezing volcano made it easy). No pumps or anything required, you can even do it in vanilla, just a lever pull to make a path at any length/width you like kill anything on the ground, by either drowning or getting encased in ice. You'll need to drain the water to a safe level if you want the drowned goblinite, but not 0/7 so you can refreeze it to 7/7.

In theory it should have worked, as I know others have done similar stuff, and I'll probably try again in the future - but I'd love to kill flying baddies in similar ways and see what other people come up with, like pressurised vetical variations. Pretty please give it some thought?

Hm. Do grates/floor bars impede freezing? If not then you cam roof the trap with them to make flying critters go inside.

I'm a bit of an idiot, I've found I misread the wiki after double-checking just now. It seems to say that grates/bars etc' are fine, and even that ice can be used to make it above ground and light. I'll just use pressure in the future to make it make it's own ceiling.

A random thought when discussing magmalings in another thread came to mind. Currently dwarves get happy thoughts from walking through waterfalls.  Would it be possible to implement happy thought from being near warm stone?  Who doesn't want heated floors in their bedroom or great hall?  I figure it's dwarfy in that they feel at home near the ultimate dwarf tool.  It would be a rewarding megaproject to design a fort with a lava plumbing system in mind in order to heat hallways, bedrooms, whatever you want.  Plus with digging invaders many of us are considering lining the fortress with a lava barrier if they try and get in.  Could be part of that project.  Armok help us if the digging invader is a lava proof forgotten beast though.

Now I personally have no idea how the coding for something like this would work.  Since heat tends to spread a few tiles maybe a check every few tiles for warm stone while walking.  Or perhaps a room modifier like "Urist enjoyed sleeping in his bedroom(heated) recently."  It could be a minor happiness modifier unless a dwarf has the a trait that he likes his feet warm.

Another option would be a buildable prop that would act as both lumination and a happiness modifier.  Some sort of lava lamp .  Made from lava proof block, glass/gem, and a lava proof stone bucket filled with lava.  What can I say, I enjoy lava.
