Jungle Ruins

Images flash in his mind - a great suit of armor, engraved with lightning, a heart-shaped stone laid upon a dying woman's chest, a woman he feels he should know

Remembering Pain

A woman, fierce and beautiful, her dark eyes staring defiantly right into his as he raises his arms. She betrays no fear. Anathema sees the spell forming, sees it drift towards her, ghostly tendrils of falselight only the gifted can see. He realizes what will happen when it locks around her, but cannot stop it even if he wished.

She lasts for a second or two. Then the pain overwhelms her and she screams and screams again, falling to the ground, her arms powerless to stop her, writhing on the ground, her face contorting violently. Tears begin to form in her eyes, but the spell continues, filling her with pain far beyond his imagination. The moments pass, the woman's pain filling the world. In the end, it fades away. The woman sobs, breathing frantically.

'Please... please...' she begs, but Anathema feels his hands rise again...

A dull knife with an ivory hilt, unadorned but used often. His knife.

Remembering Wards

Anathema has never been able to sneak up on the old man.

The man himself has given him the task, and Anathema has spent many weeks that could've been used for more rewarding purposes to learn the art of the shadows, moving silently throughout the dwelling, finding the unseen places and watching the others from there. He moves without sound, now, like the Deaths themselves, his feet sliding across the cold stone of the old man's chamber.

He is a dagger's strike from the man when he stirs, his eyes immediately finding Anathema's and locking him in place with something more powerful than magic - a teacher's disappointment. Anathema backs away, feeling frustration rise up within him. The old man stands up and studies him for a moment in silence.

'Perhaps,' he says, his voice like writing on an ancient paper, 'it is time I revealed my little deception to you. I must admit I am disappointed... I overestimated your intelligence, I think. It was unrealistic to except progress this quickly from one so young as you. And perhaps you lack the right mindset.'

He waits for a moment, watching for a reaction. It is always these games with the old man, always the secret tests. Anathema keeps his gaze down, his face passive.

'You never had any chance of reaching me, boy. You cannot see it, but my magic keeps me safe, warns me of your approach. It is called the amondiri, the Ward spell. Watch.'

With a small gesture, the old man brings a pattern of magic into existed. His crafting has always been faster than anything Anathema has seen. He feels power radiate from the man, settling into a sphere around him taking up most of the room. He can catch glimpses of its intention, a simple protective measure to wake him if something comes inside the ring. Anathema cannot help but to feel cheated, betrayed. The old man continues.

'Let that be the lesson for today. Magic is always an order higher than anything of the natural world. Trust in it, first and foremost, and you will never fail again...'

Melody's dead, yo

Melody stares back with unseeing eyes, her mouth twisted into a grotesque, mad grin. Dried blood paints her skin below her slit throat.

Elf ghosts

The ghost removes his helm to reveal startling, Elven features. Inhuman beauty locks Anathema into place. The other removes its helm also - a woman, Anathema can see. A name flashes in his mind - Ellyne, an enemy of his in times long past. She was there to bury him, but time must have taken her too.

That day in the Darkwood

Anathema cursed as the scout finished his frantic report. His lieutenants were already moving, preparing the column for an immediate attack from the rear. Pikemen rushed into the trees, hastily followed by the crossbowmen. Frustrated Kaisk raiders reared their horses in the middle of the narrow forest road, waving sabers that would not be used today; their horses would be ineffective in the dense vegetation of the forest, and the elves would not leave their cover.

"Betrayal!" Daved shouted, smashing one fist into his gauntlet. "Our movements were shielded by Chaos itself! The plan was perfect!"

"If there's anything Chaos hates, it's a perfect plan!" Anathema snarled. "Send word to Ania; tell her to strike now! She must-"

The low wail of an elven war-horn washed over the column. Down the forested road, an elf rode into view atop a magnificent white horse, a brilliant red banner streaming behind him. The elf raised his spear, and a cohort of swordsmen rushed in front of him, forming a wall of gleaming red shields. The Kaisk raiders howled in delight, spurring their horses to charge.

"Hold!" Anathema shouted angrily, already preparing a spell. "Hold, you fools! The elves-"

Just before the Kaisk riders closed with their enemy, a volley of arrows flashed over the road, clearing saddles and dropping horses. A second volley followed the first, and the few survivors found themselves thoroughly feathered. Horns echoed from all around Anathema, accompanied by the screams of the men under his command. Anathema desperately spun his horse, but something struck him in the shoulder, knocking him from his saddle. He hit the dirt-

FAKEEDIT: Actually, in planning my turn I think I need rules clarification, specifically to know how likely a Difficulty 8 action is to succeed.

1- What is the base size of the dice we're using? d6? d10?
2- How exactly do multiple dice help me? Does having 3 dice in magic mean that when I cast a spell I roll 3dx vs Diff, or do I roll three dice and use the best one as my result?

The dice are d6s, so with 3 Dice you roll 3d6, counting the rolls together. So rolling 8 or more is fairly likely.

Alas, Knave seems to be permanently gone. I'll probably introduce a new Chaos player free-of-Influence-charge at the start of next Round. Your list, I think, is missing one or two of the minor flashes by me in the text, but you appear to have been fairly thorough. Anathema's life has been interesting for sure.

Yeah, I skipped over things I considered to be more "flavor" and not actually a meaningful memory of the time before. A description of what the jungle ruins looked like in their prime, not really important. A description that hints at Anathema's relationship with the city, more important.

So, overview of what's happened so far:
Rankar got contacted by me, was shown there the Crown was, went off into the mountains and promptly altered history and went to a temple.
Ramus went out for a job killing squidpeople, got horribly outnumbered and temporarily paralyzed by his evil sister, ran to another villae and almost died by dragon but is now inside her mind while she murdernates the invadin frogpeople.
Solbryn wandered around, had a discussion with a harpy, shrunk said harpy with a fruit, met a Kasar, and got taken back to their camp.
Altogether not bad!

I'd say Order's gotten more, uhh, adventuring done. Still, Chaos has got the advantage on the 100+m sprint and/or nostalgia and cataloging junk, so I think we're fine.

Anyway, shouldn't be that long to a Round change. Vaguely soon.
