It might be worth re-testing to see if "dark matter" really does destroy ships that fly into unexplored systems without a player online on them. I say re-testing because back when Starborn Dominion was a thing, I launched a tl2 colony ship without ftl drives, and went for several days before I stopped and colonized somewhere. Iirc I made sure there were only ad many crew as stations, and then I killed the helmsman and put the ship on maximum acceleration.

There were some bugs, the ship would sometimes get turned in a different direction upon entering a system, or might reset the helm controls and stop the ship, but they were mostly just annoyances and weren't happening in every transition.
Dark matter has not changed, it destroys any spacecraft that attempts to leave a solar system without an officer or online avatar on board. But the crew attemts to stop the ship from leaving a solar system when there is neither on board. So it is only possible if you accelerate a spacecraft to light-speed and log out right before hitting the boundary. Interstellar travel is not normally recommend without an officer though, and doing so removes the risk.

Mostly the threat of dark matter has gone away since limbo was fixed, since that was the main cause of being "logged out" while traveling without an officer. You really have to be creative to cause a dark matter collision now.

As stated previously, the lag is pretty much gone. Movement and mouse-look is not AAA level smooth, but it is acceptable. Some say spacecraft movement is laggy, but I don't see it. Maybe I have been playing for too long to really feel it.
I'll suggest you hear what the others say on the matter too, but general opinion seem to be that it is much better.

The officer was quite mandatory, but the helmsman was not.

So... how's the lag these days, folks?

I'm from Brazil, so I bet my ping is one of the worst in the server. The mouse-look needs work, but it's just a bit annoying and not really a 'lag' issue.
Ship movement however, is rather choppy to me.

However.. I have a 2010* video from Hazeron, and that horrible character movement lag is no more. Like, I can precisely EVA from a small door to another. EVA used to be a complete nightmare for me, switching ships took ages.
The ship-choppyness is 50% less worse, and I never never saw ships to the insane 'jitter' with it's nose (honestly, no idea how to explain it, but you can notice it in the video).. the current choppyness is still noticeable, though, but playable.
I'll see if I can record and upload something so folks can compare. Again, mind that my ping must be 150-300 (website ping: 165ms). I wonder if I can see this info anywhere in-game.

All recent videos from Hazeron I've seen are mostly early game stuff, but in this video the guy is flying to the moon with a Rocket Engine ship. You can see that ship movement is very slightlly choppy, but barely noticeable when you compare to 2010 Hazeron. My choppiness is 25% ~ 50% higher than this guy.

In conclusion..if you have decent ping, you'll notice very slight choppiness in some situations (since nowadays all games are smooth and aim for 60fps), but when it comes to character/vehicle movement, it's fine even for me.

EDIT:
I didn't know the game had things like "volcanos".

EDIT3: Fixed some stuff, I thought my video was from 2014, but it was a reupload. It's from around 2010 [!], but I don't know the exact year.
Shadowlord, was it Starborn Dominion that fought PTMC? Do you remember why?
I seriously need to get my Hazeron facts straight.

Lag is much worse in developed systems with lots of citizens and large ships.  In less developed systems with one or two ships in play it isn't nearly as bad.

Also hostilities will aggravate any existing lag, due to the various combat AI switching on.  Usually combat is fairly smooth if its away from developed areas.

Yeah. See this:

So, in the end we "lost" due to inactivity? Meh.
Looking at the date, that was a very..busy time of my life. And Hazeron back then was terrible to play for me - it would take me sometimes minutes to position myself properly to sit on the captain's chair.
And maybe the colony I remember helping to take was the colony that 'provoked' PTMC? I was so lagged I was worrying I was killing our own troops, and I couldn't tell if I killed PCs or NPCs.
I had the story all wrong in my head. That's sad.   ::)

And..I overtook Chiefwaffles on the rankings.  :P But I doubt my empire is actually 'better' or more advanced..I'm still struggling re-learning how to deal with supply lines and the economy, and every time I'm going to work on expanding/advancing, some crazy or annoying issue crops up.
I used to try to play Hazeron like X or Port Royale..but in reality the best solution is truly to spam as much crap as you can, where it has high QL. Took me way too long to accept that reality, so every time I start from scratch and reach TL7, my economy is struggling to do anything.

An update today added the ability to give Transfer to/from orders. So you can transfer people, cargo or money between ships. Very useful for Harvesters since they have a weird habit of killing themselves or each other. Yesterday I ordered two Harvesters to land on an airport for upgrades, and one decided to land on top of the other with the force of a thousand suns.
Results: dead bodies spread all around the airport strip, and the surviving Harvester left with 1hp. It was a terrifying.
Thankfully I had already siphoned money from both, who cares about the crew.

Clone95 hasn't reported back. How's it been in the more populated area of the galaxy?  :P

You seem to have been able to maintain interest for more than a few days.

I'd be interested in joining you if you'd have me, Gabeux.

Gladly! I'll PM you the info,
I hope you don't mind the mess.. :P  And I hope you don't mind the silly theme I picked for the empire.

EDIT: QuakeIV is now the Prime Minister, and now knows some secrets about a certain Robot Motel that he shouldn't know..  :P

Turns out I had children, born in Power Armor and wielding Laser Rifles as I expected.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I fully expect uncle Quake to teach them how to use their guns, teach them about assymetric warfare, and how to properly sun-dive and perma-dying without posting any logs.

Born with equipment? You gave them that, right? ^^;

The procreation feature is pretty cool, can't say I have seen anything like it in a game outside of The Sims. But talking about it always makes me a little shy. ^^;

Sure thing! Quake is my co-emperor, so if I'm not around, he can help you!
But I'm gonna queue a ship for you once I'm on.

And.. don't mind the TL30 ship we've.. acquired..it was an interesting night.  :P

It's indeed a silly feature, but hey..instant-teleports! And avatars that works as officers!
Only bad thing is they have permadeath, so for now I'm only gonna use them as 'teleports' and give them command of (escorted/armed) survey ships..because being a trader or harvester is tougher than a patrol ship: my patrol ship spent a whole day flying around with 1% hp and nothing happened. But I send a trader on a safe route, and it collides with someone else and dies.

Real officers still have permadeath too, don't they? You have to go back and hire a replacement.

Aside: Years and years ago, for a little while, I had an alt on every freighter in my one-man empire, and they were all private freighters, because they had a tendency to 'aye, fly into sun' or atmo-dive, and need replacing. With an alt captaining them, they at least respawned (damaged, with the crew dead) so I didn't have to wait for them to be rebuilt.
