And in the left corner, newcomer and the crowd favourite: Click the Plebian!

In the right corner the reigning champion: The Plebeian Clique!

Who will win?
The polls indicate that The Plebian has already gained enough recognition among some, but one has to wonder how many of the bets were an informed choice expressing preference for one, and how many were simply due to people not knowing any better?

Tune in for the battle! Already I can hear the cheer of descriptivists, while the prescriptivist crowd tries to boo the poor Plebian down.

What an exciting night!

When that group said plebian it wasn't trying to express something related to social castes, or at least the ones determined by the income. It was more a kind of intellectual thing, calling plebians to the people who were maybe less  inclined to think their actions, or just were teenagers in that stage where you aren't very rational. On the other hand, a part of that group was in upper-mid class, but the other one was just plain middle class (or at least I think so, it is quite difficult to classify someone by their income in a contry whose inflation is over 25%).

Hey, I say "plebian" sometimes. Not as a serious putdown, but still. The word does not define the intent.
There was a lot of furore over here (in the UK) about an (alleged) use of the word abbreviated form "Pleb".  The (again alleged, maybe by now discredited) swearing that also occurred was generally considered a secondary issue to the use of the "Pleb" term...

(Intervening posts by others may already have referenced this...  Not yet read to the end of the thread.)

Also, as a related issue, remember that anyone who refers to "The Hoi Poloi" probably is one of them. ;)

Oh yes, I know. Plebgate was a large contributing factor in my uptake of calling people plebs/plebeian.

Go on. Again, not particularly distinctive from these forums, aside from "plebeians" (was it used for humor?). What kind of actions? Were they any different? Leery at their lack of ethereal pursuits or traditional champagne socialism? I'm all ears.

Damned dictionaries. The word I tried to use was plebeians, not plebians (well, maybe it was me the one who misread it).

That word was used inside that group, and was mainly used as a means to differentiate it from the rest, with a pejorative implicit meaning. The things that they claimed to be different from the rest, were, in fact, contradictory. They would say that the rest of the people lack ambition in life, or that they care about mundane things, but then they could complain about the way someone dresses, judge by stereotypes, and that stuff. To sum up, they claimed to be innovative and all the like, but acted in a conservative way. There was one girl who said that she like to hear Bach, while I heard her once expressingly say that she didn't like that particular compositor. I used to mention some classical music just to see if she could identify it, but it seemed that she wasn't a person who knew very much about that subject. That group even didn't like those who showed to be better at what they claimed to be superior in. I was even frowned upon when I used the word "analogy" once.
I always saw them as wannabes, just that.

No, not really. I mean, the rugby players hung out with other rugby players, the stoners with the stoners, the geeks with the geeks, the goths with the goths. But it was because, well, they shared interests. There was also a ton of overlap and no serious inter-group conflict, so I'd say it hardly qualified as "cliques". I mean, thinking back to parties in highschool, the people who would qualify as jocks, preps, geeks, and stoners were always well represented at the same events, and everyone generally got along and had a blast. It's a heartwarming scene watching halfback and a metalhead lift the socially awkward overachiever up for a kegstand. Aside from a few individual douchebags my highschool environment was pretty chill.

I think cliques are a common narrative device because they're 2 dimensional, and therefor very easy to understand. In real life people are, of course, not.

The issue is that well... Cliques on TV have become so cliché that they are used like they are a given. Which means that the implication is that they are a given in real life.

Cliques?
...
No. No one at my school really cares enough to form cliques.

It kind of did. Mostly latinos and blacks, but those are races. Although, my school was somewhat full of douchebags, jerks, and thugs.

Mine most definitely did. Though they weren't super rigid, I think it was kind of the natural result of going to a school with a lot of wealthy kids, smack dab next to kids from average income households.

I ended up gravitating toward the trouble makers, tier 1. We were the ones that tended to skip class, smoke on school property and generally looked like trouble-makers. Trouble-makers tier 2 were the ones getting arrested on school grounds and dealing drugs.

My highschool probably had them, but the only one I was familiar with was the anime club I was a part of.

Hmm, I was almost certain I had marked this page with my post, and specifically discussed the Plebian thing. Must be going mad.

Now that it occurs to me there might be bias in my school towards kids of your own club, but it's not so noticeable that it's a problem.
