Use neither Mythos Major nor Mythos Minor as test maps until the game is finished

Trade is must. Perhaps even make tin almost impossible to get without trading? I don't recall any large deposits any closer then Cyprus. If we do get rid of nonlocal fauna and flora, try to put local ones, like Olive trees, back in. Espcially Olives.

Ninja'd!

I... Dont think it is. That'll have to be honor system as well. Same with the primordial gods, all the way back to Khaos.

Also, I've been thinking about how to implement the various non-discrete powers Gods like Helios and Prometheus posses.  Here's what I've figured so far (not a concrete system by any means, if you've got a better system, feel free to suggest it.)

Reputation on Olympus comes from Mortals creating statues, engravings and paintings as well as recreating some Mythic site or other.  So, this reputation will be a good measurement of the relative authority (or Divine Power) each deity possesses at any one time.   Since the relative strengths of the deities were always in flux, each deity striving to diminish another or bolster themselves using machinations and nefarious plans (which makes for some great stories), I think that gains and losses in DP would be a great way to show that in our game too.

As such, DP's could be cashed in to use in-forum powers like Helios requiring everyone to privately message him any plots they have in the works (to simulate his "all-seeing" power.  While it may be "always on", he'd have to burn a DP to "pay attention" to stuff in the wider world.)  For Prometheus, he'd burn a DP to play two versions of the same save file (posting both) and choose which one he wants to be the "real" one, to simulate being able to see into the future.  Likewise, Styx punishing an oathbreaker would have to burn a DP to do so, making that deity unable to post anything other than body movements here in the forum "in character" or speak with anyone in the game world for the next 10 in-game years.  The three most powerful gods (most DP's) will form the Divine Council and be able to suggest quests and endeavors for that week's poll.  (Of course, if those Gods happen to want to grant favors to "lesser gods" by listening to their requests in exchange for "certain considerations", who's to know?)

What do you guys think?

...I can't think of anything wrong with that, if you can tell me what I would use the DP for with Atlas.  Otherwise, I would only be gaining, never cashing in, the DP.

I think for this game, Atlas' will have the responsibility to map the entire world "on his shoulders". If he should happen to burn a DP by forcing another Deity to take responsibility for mapping a specific 16 x 16 area instead, that sounds like it could work very well.  I suggest downloading dfhack v3 and the latest isoworld to help you in the endeavour, which is quite monumental, but is fitting for one of those who lost the titanomachy.

Paaaad: Why make tin so rare?  I thought we wanted bronze to be available for smelting, but not iron/steel (Except in magma forges like Hephaestus')?  Is it because the primitives ("barbarians...") wouldn't use wooden weaponry otherwise?  (The elves already use no metal, so I'm not sure if its an issue or not.)  Am I missing something obvious here?

Edit:

Got it.  That certainly would make it more difficult to have enough bronze around to outfit armies.  The "Bronze men", for instance, wouldn't be wearing much bronze that way.

What would I be spending deity points on? Converting cities into heaps of corpses and maenads? >.>

I'll get the files prepared in good time. I'll probably upload them with the language file.

Also, I have found lists of birds and mammals of Greece on wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_birds_of_Greece - warning: ornithologists are crazy, crazy people and this is a long-ass list
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mammals_of_Greece

and a list of reptiles of Europe as a whole

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_reptiles_of_Europe - difficult to sort through

This is where I checked for creatures that don't occur in DF that would occur in Greece.

Eric: I don't see much in the way of special forum powers for Dionysus.  From everything I've read, he was very "rooted" in the physical realm.  About the only thing I can see being even remotely useful is the fact that he was one of the few who was able to go down into Hades more than once and bring a dead person back to life.  That and the fact that he could also talk with the dead would make him able to courier messages between the living and the dead.

Descending into the Underworld (the Cavern systems or Hell itself maybe?) to physically bring back a corpse would then allow you to burn a DP (or several) to "resurrect" someone rather than have them remain dead.

I was reading further on Maenids and those were the members of his female only "mystery" or religion.  They didn't raze cities, but were instead part of their populaces.  Only when he visited was he celebrated by his followers who had the terrible madness afflict them at that time.  It's possible that killing an entire city, rather than getting them to become more big drinkers and partiers would actually give DP's to the death-aspected gods instead.  Like I said before, it's not a perfect system.  What are your thoughts?

So, in checking through the lists of birds, beasts and reptiles, I see what you mean by "crazy, crazy people".  Fortunately,

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Ancient Greeks probably didn't have 150 names for every minute variation of sandpiper - they probably just said "those little shore birds that run back and forth" and left it at that.  So we can just have a bird called "sandpiper" that encompasses that whole range of birds.  Likewise the various types of skinks, would all be handled under the catchall of "skink" and the slow-worm would be just another type of snake.  If we look at this list from the point of view of an Ancient Greek, the basic shapes and differences in what they do are much more important.  Also, they probably were more concerned with the types of mammals than anything else, since "can we eat it?", "will it try to eat me?" and "will it try to harm me?" are pretty good indicators of importance to most societies.

(Heck, even now, most tourists' conversation is mainly focused on food and discomforts/narrow escapes from death followed by intense personal interests like close relatives, ornithology or "that castle would have been perfect for my next dwarf fortress!")

Eric: You really are loving this idea of an army of basically maddened women laying waste to cities, aren't you?  I'm thinking our Dionysus will probably be less like this

and more like this

so long as you have fun with it.

I honestly don't know right now. There's not an adventurer party mechanic in Dwarf Fortress at the moment, unfortunately...

Best version of adventure parties would be having the various adventurers retire in one place then be serially recruited as NPC's.  Each time a new person picks up the save game file, they'd become the new leader of the group for that next while, recruiting the others and so on.  Of course, there might be losses, but with the Gods, that would only be a loss of "stuff" because they'd be able to reincarnate another avatar on their turn - and possibly go slap silly whoever was in charge when they got killed (unless they weren't available, had made a deal with you on Olympus for restitution or you got distracted by something shinier.)  The continual strife amongst the gods would support this behaviour, not to mention all the politics and general assholery that most the gods indulged in time and again.  Its part of why they make great stories.

I actually meant party as in festivities. We are able to recruit adventurers as we see fit. Or, as they are willing to join.

In 2013,  A RL appears in Mythic Greece!
RL attacks The Gods and they are distracted and lose posting this week fleeing into the surrounding forums

Hey guys, I'm wondering how everyone is doing and (impatiently) waiting to see all the stuff you guys have been talking about mod-wise.

I've been interrupted by the beginning of summer semester. I have, I think, finished the list of animal people. I will upload that with the language file, which I also updated to fix the ID name.

Here's the download for that: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=7665
