Finding a Young Vampire
« on: April 26, 2013, 02:45:17 pm »

Alright, so I know all [read: most] about how to find old vampires. Best being that they have a bazillion 'former member' tags, bunch of children, etc. My current problem seems to be that, among the two vampires I know about an currently have defending my caverns, I have a third vampire skulking among my populace. I've checked everyone's [read: some] of their thoughts and preferences,  but I see none that either don't have food/drink/sleep thoughts, or any with a million kids or former citizenships. My world is only 251 years old, so a lot of my dwarves are fairly young. I've concluded that this vampire, whomever it may be, is clearly someone young.

My question is, how the hell do I find out who it is? I've had a legendary miner, a great woodcutter, a master axedwarf and some random craftsdwarf fall victim to this bastard. And I think he bit my speardwarf too, because he's wandering around wounded and [Pale] but has no injuries whatsoever. So I'm tired of his nonsense and I want him dead.

if he's killed multiple dwarves, he almost assuredly hasn't been drinking for awhile.  The lack of booze thought that identifies vampires easily is not actually a thought, its a condition similar to "doesn't care about anything anymore"/"is a hardened individual"/"getting used to tragedy."  It appears at the personality description in white at the bottom of the dwarf description page.

Unless you've modded the raws so vampires drink or added an alcohol tag to dwarf blood.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Hm. I thought dwarven vampires simply didn't have drink thoughts period, so I've gone through them looking for one lacking any thought related to food or drink. I don't wanna have to go through 100+ dwarves again.. Ugh. I hate vampires. Even if they are tough.

Set up a justice system, disable individual bedrooms and make a community dormitory, inside a meeting hall (possibly your dining room).  Wait for vampire to strike again, be noticed, and be reported to guard cap.  Let justice do its thing, or eliminate the guilty party yourself.

theres a few signs of being a vampire regardless of age. They are always historical figures, so they tend to have un-regular experience levels and skill distribution compared to generated migrants. They may be missing certain body parts from fights in world generation. They are usually a witness or suspect in the murder (they may "discover the body" themselves, after killing a dwarf). They will have "not had a drink" in their description where slothen mentioned. And they may own accessories made from the bodyparts of intelligent creatures (ie dwarve hair crown).

first look through the witnesses, and if ANY dwarves have dabbling in most skills (and is a recent immigrant) with uneven experience distributions (look through therapist) and does not have any recent drink thoughts/not had a drink for some time, you might consider isolating these dwarves alone using burrows and locked doors until they get hungry (proving their not a vampire) or exposing them to walled-off but visible undead (non-vampires run away in fear).

You could always make a slab for one of the vampire victims and it should tell you the name of the vampire that killed him (IDR if that is the real name or false name though). In the event it's the real name you could always then combine it with duplicate/legends mode, look up that vampire, and then note who he is and find him in your fortress.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I remember once or twice also looking at a vampire's deity through the relationships tab, and seeing that dwarf cursed with vampirism in the deity's long page of "deity did this, that, and the other to PUNY MORTALS. And received worship."
