Let's play Endless Space, like a newb!

Let's Play Endless Space!
So, yeah, I recently finished my third game of this wonderful game, and I thought it would be cool to attempt a let's play of it. For greater !!FUN!!, you will be allowed to somewhat direct my actions, like the race I will be playing, the diplomatic stance, ship design (missiles, guns or lasers?), or more simply naming systems, ships and fleets.

For those of you who don't know what Endless Space is, it's a very good 4X game. Fairly classic. You got star systems linked by space lanes, each having 1-6 planets of various types and sizes, each with its own perks (like mutant flora, rings, irradiation, ruins, etc...). There is all the classic systems of production, food, money, population and whatnot. If you played any 4X at all you will quickly understand 80% of what's going on.
The combat system is unusual. Some may be turned off by it, but if you compare it to Civilization, it's much more interactive and tactical. Basically there's three kinds of weapons (with appropriate defence for each), and cards you play, which gives bonuses and can counter each other.

WINNING:There's several ways to win the game:
Spoiler: Winning conditions (click to show/hide)

_____________________________________________________________________

First, deciding the race we will play. There is 10 of them:
Spoiler:  The races. (click to show/hide)

Then there's the form and size of the galaxy, and the number of opponents (you can choose their race, too). I find 3-5 opponents is a good number, but if you want a 1v1 on a huge 2-arms galaxy, fine. Don't try a 8 player battle on a tiny galaxy though, tiny galaxy is REALLY tiny.
You can also choose the number of constellations, space lanes, age of the galaxy (influence the types of stars present, which influence the type of planets.), but I won't list all of the options (there's a lot!). Pirates are off, that's not negociable. Also difficulty level, set to newbie (or easy at most). That said, feel free to suggest!

Play as Horatio Horatio of the Horatio Horatio. With their food bonus, they can mostly ignore specializing planets for food, and the extra pop cap is nice.

I'm almost tempted to say Cravers - diplomacy was never one of Endless Space's strong suits, after all, and there's nothing quite as satisfying as playing an unstoppable rampaging menace to the galaxy.

Barring that, send in the Horatio clones!

So yeah, the Horatio Horatio of Horatio Horatio, sons and daughters of Horatio Horatio or whatever. We'll beautify the galaxy with our image! Let the Clone War begin! (couldnt resist...)
Five empires on a medium galaxy. Everything random if possible, otherwise normal/medium.

Watch the unrest while colonizing the glorious Horatio planets (I vote for changing our home system's name to Horatio). Just from colonizing the homeworld's deserts, you'd get -25 unrest, while it's -75 to fully colonize. The latter would cripple the expansion of the glorious Horatio Empire, even if Tergus trains morale boosting.

I vote finishing N-way plants, before researching tundra and desert colonizations, then lasers.

You know what? Those Pilgrims are going down.

Question is not IF we are destroying the space hippies, but WHEN and HOW.

Hmm... if I remember Endless Space mechanics, that colony is vulnerable to invasion for another ~45ish turns without a formal war declaration. You could rush a couple of combat techs - I doubt the Pilgrims will grab weapons tech early, so get an improvement in kinetic armour and whatever weapon comes with, then begin the invasion!

Disclaimer: this may or may not result in your imminent annihilation. But hey, what's the worst that could happen?  ;)

Also, any chance you can change French to English in game settings or something?

Will try.

So plan is to rush their colony ASAP and eventually wipe them out clean? And lasers. Good.

Pew pew, pewpewpew!

Actually, I really like lasers. Still packs a punch at long range, and dominates mid. Unless the other guy has missiles, you'll destroy them before the fight hits close-range. Even if they have missiles, you'll get lots of shots off before the missiles connect. And I think, early on, they share the tech with kinetic blockers, which are good because a lot of early ships will be using kinetics.

Then again, I'm pretty terrible at Endless Space combat, so take this all with a grain of salt.  ;)

TBH, my main tactic is "don't build a single ship if you can afford to, go straight for dreadnoughts and deploy six of them with level 6 weapons right before things get ugly, then steamroll everything with 2-3 12k power fleets against 2-5k power fleets" :P
My max was a 40k military power fleet: 4 dreads with 25 max level lasers and defence. I fought 13 fleets, and no small ones, and wrecked them all. Over 1 million damage dealt, zero received. Per battle.
But that's with the Sophons, when I usually have such a tech lead that I might as well play the Endless.

It is time for everyone's favorite moment: What does Neonivek think about this game?
-----

Something about Endless space always rubs me the wrong way and I can never exactly put my finger on it. There is nothing wrong as far as I can see, it seems to be almost flawless executed and if it were made two decades earlier it would easily be considered one of the greats today.

Yet I guess the universe just seems so flat and lifeless.

It is like everything in endless space is there but slowly off center or mechanical especially how planets advantages and resources are handled. While some games had you research science this one loves to make you research things. It is just missing many of the things that could have made the planets alive. For example what if, for example, Lava planets had their own planet types instead of going off of the same pool?

Yet on the other hand I love how different each race is... and in a 4x where usually they are EXACTLY THE SAME apart from a few advantages and disadvantages... that is saying something. Sure they are the same at heart but it is nice to see a 4x that actually goes "Well this race is robotic, so clearly they don't have to teraform".

So in my opinion, it is a pretty good game. Yeah I just can't get into it... Yet honestly with the right mindset it is pretty good.
