A Were... skunk?
« on: April 25, 2013, 11:55:13 pm »

Wow, okay, so this is my third thread tonight, and I feel like I'm gonna get banned for spamming, but I've never gotten this far and shit just keeps happening! This time it's a--and I shit you not--a wereskunk. I put my fortress on full-alert, sent my shitty little militia out after him, and followed him as he proceeded to exit the map. Right after he leaves, a human merchant walks in in his place. So... I'm right about to kill this guy before he turns into a skunk and starts killing my men and kidnapping my women. But should I not? I mean, is it not possible for werebeasts to disguise as humans? Because if not, I don't wanna just go ahead and start a war with the nearest human civilization.

Okay... nevermind. I guess this is just a legitimate human trading caravan. Still, that's an odd coincidence. Not to mention it just leaving like that? Oh well, hope it doesn't come back.

Werecreatures seem to act somewhat randomly. Sometimes they just kill anything in sight, other times they just mill around or run off the map. For a beginner I'd say the best bet is to just pull everyone underground and close the gates. With any luck, the beast will just hang around until it turns back into its normal form and you can send your militia to kill it. The main thing is to make sure dwarves are not bitten, because that will cause them to also turn onto werebeasts.

Your beast may return again but it will always be announced, so you don't have to kill random merchants to uphold quarantine. Unless you feel like it, of course.

a werebeast in beast form will fight, but in normal form will run away. Nothing mysterious there. They usually (I think) only arrive at your fort during full moon, so as beast, but due to the interesting way time goes in fortress mode, they may have changed back by the time they meet the first dwarf, and run away immediately

I once had a Weregecko. It was promptly slaughtered by a single badger on its third visit.

I kept expecting it to sell me car insurance or something.
