Author Topic: Anyone recommend good MUDs? (so far I've found Discworld and Armageddon)  (Read 6769 times)

So far, I've found ArmageddonMUD (sounds amazing. But, looks really hard to get into (learn). And, I'm not sure how good (or bad heh) I'll be at doing the roleplay thing). Outside of the learning curve, it looks like I could get really into this one. There is a really old thread about this MUD, on these forums...but, that is back from 2010. Anyone recommend a good way to get started on this one, or what I should read before getting in?

There is also the Discworld MUD I found. I read all the rooms are all custom and a good world to explore. Looks really interesting, so I'll be trying this, as well.

Any thoughts on those two MUDs? And have any recommendations of your own? I'm not interested in any that are like Aardwolf (hack and slash, and I don't like that type of MUD. Its Diku isn't it? Whatever its based from, I've never liked any MUDs based off that engine (or whatever its called in the MUD world)).

And I already know about Top Mud Sites and Mudconnect...but...there must be like...a million different MUDs to look through.

Also, the biggest problem I have with MUDs (in the past) are the commands and getting lost. Getting lost isn't an issue. But, I remember one MUD, forgot which one...was years ago. I had to get something out of a bag...

I tried many ways to get that something out of the bag. The other person (I was trading), was patiently waiting. There was no out of character at all, so I felt like I couldn't ask for help. I must have been trying various commands for half an hour (think it took 45 minutes), before just putting the whole bag on the table. I kind of gave up after that. :P I even tried "help get" or various help commands...but, there were none. Actually...I think it was Armageddon. It was! Wow, that was like 4 or 5 years ago, lol. I guess I did play that one, but I had no idea what to do or how to play or anything...it was the most confusing game I ever played. It made Myst look easy. :P Guess that is why I forgot about it, lol. I still want to get into it, since it sounds awesome...but man, just taking something out of a bag was impossible for me. And if I felt like I could, I would have just asked the guy...but, then that isn't in character anymore. He had more patients than me, just waiting there for 45 minutes as I was a noob. :P

Anyway...rambling aside. I want to get into a good MUD, but just not sure where to start. I'm really leaning toward Armageddon (out of the ones I've personally found), but I guess I played that before, and just had no idea how to do anything. But, maybe you guys have advice or/and suggestions.

I used to play Achaea for quite awhile. The creators, Iron Realm Entertainment, have made four or five various games at this point that are roughly similar.

I also was following the creation of Lithmeria but it suffered from a pretty awful launch and I lost interest: http://www.lithmeria.com/

Ah, yeah I remember Achaea. That was a lot of fun, and was (and is) really active. But wow...to buy stuff in their cash shop...its more expensive than Allods or any MMO I've ever played. I think to buy 100 credits? cost like 50 dollars or something. Even if it was only 25. No thanks. When I saw that, I stopped playing. If I was to go that route, I would just pay monthly for that one pay to play MUD. Gemstone? Dragonrealm? Something like that. I always forget the name. But, that is far cheaper.

Achaea would be a good choice, if it wasn't pay to win. Because, whoever buys more...is going to win. I did like the dynamic story and stuff, but so expensive.

I've played a few. Only I'd recommend are HellMOO, which is kind of a rape/gore/perversion-fest that incidentally has a 300 page bay12 thread, and TomeNET, which is technically a MUD, but has an ascii map and "multiplayer roguelike" is probably  better description for it

( Was very briefly a 'God' in Imperian, believe me. There are better MUDs out there, in recent years their games have shifted very heavily to PVPers rule the schoolyard and unless you plan on sinking $400 into the game, no I kid thee not, that's roughly the amount you need to spend to be PVP ready. Then there are better options )

Complaints aside, I'd suggest giving HellMOO a look it's a decent play if nothing else. Another one worth a look is Carrion Fieldsm I haven't played in a while but the last time I did it was fun.

The two I have played the most are Gemstone and Cybersphere.

Gemstone has a monthly fee ($15) after the first free month, but gives you a pretty good range of classes and races to play as. It isn't as RP enforced as it once was, but there is still some RP fun to be had. One thing that separates it from the others is the healing and damage system. You still have hit points, but your body can take damage as well. Any wound you take will result in a "minor" wound. Minors can be be healed by an empath, but instead of healing them straight out, the empath transfers the wound to themselves and then heals it, leaving a scar. Scars have negative effects just like wounds.

Cybersphere was... interesting when I played it last. It has a negative reputation here because people from that community occasionally create a new account just to advertise it. That aside it was a fairly interesting and deep RP enforced game. It was also very unforgiving. I may have just sucked but in the year that I played I think I had two characters that lasted more than a month.

My god, you must try out LegendMUD.  I spent most of high school (and portions of college) playing that game.

Yes, it says it's based off of DIKU, but trust me that there's almost none of the original code left.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LegendMUD

It's pretty much a historical fiction MUD.  You switch between three different eras: ancient, medieval, and industrial.  Things are where you'd expect them to be.  So if you're in the industrial era, you're not going to see many things that are "magical".  However, if you're in ancient, you will find sea serpents, druids, Arabian mages, etc.

There are no hard classes, per se, but which hometown you pick at character creation will limit which skills you can access.  Coming from industrial london you can be a surgeon or a sharpshooter, but you can't use magic or druidic arts.  Likewise, hailing from ancient Ireland is perfect for a druid and a dabbler in magic, but you can't use a gun or modern medicine.

The Reach (now Fallcoast) was sort of an interesting take of mixing oWOD themes but I don't think it really worked, it was kind of hard to take seriously all the scrawlings of who owns what part of the city as territory, it just felt like they tried to cram too many settings together that don't really work together, removes a lot of the feeling of mystery, BUT, I saw some weird, interesting horror events they put on, some of it that was pasted up as history and logs posted to their wiki, some of it sort of Lovecraftian stuff.

The best writing I've seen has been on MUDs for sure, things like SS13 are decent but they don't really have the time for people to stop and write much in detail, the look on someone's face, the tone of voice, that flicker in the dark, etc. Just good, anyone that hasn't tried SHOULD.

Iron Realms is known for making awful grindy pay (real money) to win MMO-wannabe games (also with no rules against and encouragement to program scripts to automate combat, medicines, everything, with a horrendously awful parser compared to something like Discworld that makes performing the same actions by hand a several times slower chore compared to essentially encouraging people to run bots), they're like the worst aspects of the modern online games industry put into text games.

They also got given staff positions on topmudsites, the CEO "sarapis" uses a different name on topmudsites as staff there, instead "the_logos" and, like Aardwolf (which is actually owned by Lasher who bought Topmudsites from the original owner Synozeer and now their game never leaves the #1 spot EVER), probably get artificially inflated "votes" on the site as a kickback, since they have a lot of money to throw around from encouraging people to gamble for virtual items with no age check either in the same way that got the FTC looking into the CS:GO gambling scandal

What is it with internet admins that name themselves after gods (in IRE muds it takes it to a new level, admins actually making themselves in-character gods that people have to IN CHARACTER roleplay-enforced devoutly suck up to)? Corrupt crap just follows like biblical plagues...

Genesis is fantastic if you're looking for a sort of 'straightforward' fantasy MUD with no weird mechanics or anything; https://www.genesismud.org

They did had a really, really confusing inventory system where you had to save items, and only certain ones could be saved so you lost most of your items every time you logged out. This put a lot of people off, but after campaigning against it (along with many others) they recently removed it which was great. I'd now recommend it without reservation.

It also has loads of different fantasy worlds in one - you can go to Gondor or the Dragon Lance worlds etc. etc.

Dragonrealms (https://www.play.net/dr/) is a lot of fun and I keep going back to it every couple years. Its been going since the early 90s. Theres a paid monthly subscription but I believe they offer a free 30 day trial now. The combat and skill progression is unique from any other MUDs I've played and the combat is really detailed. The guilds and skills are a lot of fun and exploring the world is pretty cool. Theres a lot of lore and backstory and history created by in-game events over the years but you don't need to know any of it to jump in and play.

I've been looking around a bit for a full loot PvP MUD after the various HellMOO variants (HATE and Inferno, primarily) kinda lost their lustre (and playerbase)... Specifically, I've been trying to find something fun to play with the blind gamer group I know from back in the days in Hell.

I suppose PvE or partial/non-loot work as well, so long as there's some good teamwork synergy, but a lot of the fun in Hell came from scrabbling together what little we could and then somehow managing to raid a couple Goons of their stuff. Why Goons? Well, because the Goons owned most of Hell, as with EVE, but for whatever reason they had this massive hateboner against "the blinds" and were trying to grief them out of the game. So we returned suit.

This lead to a massive ideological holy war that ended up being a lot of fun.
